    • SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). La corrida de la pólvora ("The Gunpowder Bullfight"), 1880. Oil on vellum. Fan country.
      Oct. 03, 2023

SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). La corrida de la pólvora ("The Gunpowder Bullfight"), 1880. Oil on vellum. Fan country.

      Est: €4,000 - €4,500

SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). La corrida de la pólvora ("The Gunpowder Bullfight"), 1880. Oil on vellum. Fan country. Carved ebony wood. Signed and dated in the lower area. Exhibited at the Muestra de abanicos del Museu de l'Art de la pell, Vic, 1997. Measurements: 30 x 54 cm. Among the typical customs of the Arab people, the running of the gunpowder was one of the festivities that caused the greatest fascination among the Orientalist painters of the 19th century. Indeed, the celebration of the gunpowder run, consisting of the unbridled race of a group of horsemen across an open plain, performing dangerous manoeuvres with their horses while continuously firing their sping pikes, allowed the painters to capture in all their frenzied movement of the galloping horses, their legs enveloped in the dust of the desert sand. This is splendidly captured in Sánchez-Barrudo's painting "La corrida de la pólvora" ("The Gunpowder Run"), now in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemiza. In the country of the present fan, the Andalusian painter has reproduced a similar version of the scene. Interested in drawing and painting from an early age, Sánchez-Barbudo began his training in the workshop of the restorer Pedro Vera. At the age of nineteen he moved to Seville to study at the Provincial School of Fine Arts, thanks to the support of his protector and patron, the Marquis del Castillo, where he became a pupil of José Villegas. In 1878 he travelled to Madrid to further his training, remaining in the capital for four years. In 1881 he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and was awarded a third-class medal for his work "Un salón de esgrima" ("A Fencing Salon"). The following year he went to Rome with his master. Due to his master's influence, and given that Villegas was a friend of Rosales, Fortuny, Zamacois and others, as well as a painter with a magnificent clientele (Vanderbilt, Stuard, Krupp...), Sánchez-Barbudo was initiated into the fashionable genre, costumbrista historicism (known as casacón subject matter). Fascinated by the artistic atmosphere of the Italian capital, Sánchez-Barbudo decided to settle in the city and, from then on, to make the city the protagonist of his painting. In addition to the themes of mansions, he also produced small-format paintings of high society scenes and landscapes, and was particularly noted for his portraits. He occasionally sent works to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid. In 1884 he sent to Spain the monumental canvas entitled "Hamlet. Last Scene", with which he won a second medal at the National Exhibition of the same year. He exported his works especially to England, where his historicist genre paintings were extraordinarily well received, and he himself enjoyed a reputation as an exquisite painter. Sánchez-Barbudo showed in his works a perfect mastery of the basics of the genre: a skilful combination of bourgeois naturalism and loosely executed preciosity. His brushstrokes are rapid and precise, and he gives the chromaticism a totally personal vibrancy and variety. He worked with small touches, both in the figures and in the scenes, paying special attention to the atmosphere. He was also an excellent watercolourist and engraver.

      Est: €2,500 - €2,800

SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ BARBUDO (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Lady", ca.1890 Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin (illegible signature, partially erased). Size: 63 x 43,5 cm; 70 x 51 cm (frame). Sánchez-Barbudo demonstrates in his portraits a perfect control of the bases of the genre, for his wise combination of bourgeois naturalism and preciosity of loose workmanship. This combination comes together in this exquisite portrait of a young woman with ruff and shawl, which seems to be inspired by the damsels of Flemish 17th-century painters, but at the same time is completely modern. His brushstroke is both rapid and precise, and gives the chromaticism a unique vibrancy. Sánchez-Barbudo began his training in the workshop of the restorer Pedro Vera. At the age of nineteen he moved to Seville to study at the Provincial School of Fine Arts, thanks to the support of his protector and patron, the Marquis del Castillo, where he became a pupil of José Villegas. He worked with minute touches, both in the figures and in the settings, paying particular attention to atmosphere. He was also an excellent watercolourist and engraver. In 1997 an anthological exhibition was dedicated to him, curated by J.M. Rodríguez Pardo. Salvador Sánchez-Barbudo is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga, the Museo Histórico and the Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernández Blanco in Buenos Aires and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago de Chile, as well as in numerous private collections both in Spain and abroad.

SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Escena galante", Rome. Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower right corner. Measurements: 42 x 31 cm. Salvador Sánchez-Barbudo was an admired painter of gallant and palatial scenes, like the one we are dealing with. In a sumptuous interior covered with mirrors and tapestries, a young woman fans herself coquettishly while a gentleman approaches from her left. The eighteenth-century clothing of the aristocratic classes has been depicted with painstaking attention to detail, extracting the right qualities from each garment: lace, silk, brocade, trimmings, lace, velvets and powdered wigs. Exquisite furniture completes the decoration. SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Religious", 1885. Watercolour on paper. Signed, dated and located in the lower left area. Size: 106 x 70 cm; 113 x 79 cm (frame). Work carried out in Rome in the year 1885 in which the artist portrays a religious. Strictly frontally in terms of the composition, the hands joined on his chest and the wide open mouth indicate that the author has captured the protagonist officiating a religious service. His spontaneity is unusual in portraits of religious people. The loose, vibrant brushstrokes, without losing the rigour of the drawing, show an image dominated by a pictorialist aesthetic that was very much in keeping with the taste of the period. Furthermore, the subject matter is also of great relevance, as during the 19th century the Church was going through a crisis of faith, so much so that it turned to the arts as an ally in the transmission of its institutional values. SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Fishermen of Capri", 1886. Oil on panel. Signed, dated and located in the lower right corner. Measurements: 23 x 39 cm; 43.5 x 59 cm (frame). Salvador Sánchez-Barbudo exported his works especially to England, where his historicist costumbrismo paintings were extraordinarily well received, and he himself enjoyed a reputation as an exquisite painter. In his paintings he displays a perfect mastery of the basics of the genre: a skilful combination of costumbrista genre and loosely executed preciosity. As in the panel in the present work, which depicts a fisherman being helped by three children to collect the fishing tackle, his brushstrokes are swift and precise, and his chromaticism has a totally personal vibrancy and variety. Sanchez-Barbudo worked with small touches, both in the figures and in the scenes, paying special attention to the atmosphere. Fascinated by the artistic atmosphere of the Italian capital, Sánchez-Barbudo decided to settle in Italy and from then on made the city the protagonist of his painting. Last Scene", which won him a second medal at the National Exhibition of the same year. He was also an excellent watercolourist and engraver. In 1997 an anthological exhibition was dedicated to him.

In this work, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a landscape of contrasting light, with a field in shadow illuminated in the background by the flames of a fire in the city of Rome. It is a distinctly modern landscape, characterised by the contrasting effects of light and by an atmosphere of great naturalism, based on colour applied with mutable brushstrokes, shorter and more precise in some areas, almost invisible in others, and dense and directional in the sky, the silhouettes silhouetted in the background, etc. Interested in drawing and painting from an early age, Sánchez-Barbudo began his training in the workshop of the restorer Pedro Vera. Although the sources do not reveal that Salvador Sánchez Barbudo, never visited Africa, his works reflected themes of orientalist character as in this case. Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the Romantic spirit of flight in time and space. The first Orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the outset to fail. Like Flaubert in "Salambó", the painters produced meticulous portraits of Orient and imagined pasts, recreated down to the last millimetre but ultimately unknown and idealised. Interested in drawing and painting from an early age, Sánchez-Barbudo began his training in the workshop of the restorer Pedro Vera.
