La bellezza del gruppo nasce dall'evidente capacità tecnica, e dalla spontaneità elegante delle forme e delle linee compositive. Il nostro artista ebbe grandissimo successo già in giovane età con il Vendemmiatore, che fu installato nel Palazzo Reale di Milano, e partecipò a numerose esposizioni in Europa e in America con grande successo, eseguendo anche numerosi monumenti pubblici per Milano e altre città italiane. BARCAGLIA DONATO (1849 - 1930). Athlete.. Signature at the base. Born in Pavia in 1849 and student at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Donato Barcaglia was a pupil of the sculptor Abbondio Sangiorgio, reaching success at a very young age (seventeen years old) for his sculpture ""Il vendemmiatore"", acquired in 1866 by the Società di Belle Arti of Milan, and then obtaining numerous awards at international exhibitions, including Vienna (1873), Florence (1875) and Philadelphia (1876). A version of his sculpture of the ""Athlete"" was instead awarded the gold medal at the 1902 St. Petersburg Exposition, while a marble example is in the Fondazione Cariplo Collection. Donato Barcaglia (Italian, 1849-1930), lo Spazzacamino, a sculpted white marble model of a street urchin, the boy portrayed in rustic dress and with a half eaten loaf of bread and a brush tucked under his left arm, seated on a fluted and shaped plinth and raised on a further naturalistically modelled base with foliage, inscribed D. Barcaglia Milano to the reverse, on a further moulded circular plinth, 79cm high; presented on a further green serpentine marble columnar pedestal, approximately 184cm high overallDonato Barcaglia was born in Pavia and trained at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. He became well-known as a portrait sculptor, though during his long career he also sculpted a number of allegorical and social genre groups such as this urchin boy. A version of this model by the sculptor sits in Paddington Street Gardens, Marylebone. This 'Street Orderly Boy' was presented to the parish of St Marylebone during the Second World War.

Bronze with patina, branch-shaped on top a nest with a group of cherubs, engraved date and signature on the nest. Height 57.48 in. Sensationally known at seventeen, celebrated at twenty-five, Barcaglia directed a large atelier from which infinite replicas of his works started for every corner of the globe. Very elegant, a frequent visitor to the great world, always a public man and present in all commissions, he made use of his technical ease, his inventiveness and his glance for a series of works, especially busts, in which he uniformed himself with finesse if not with depth, to the taste of the moment. Fruitful, very industrious, conscientious, he worked marble preferably, not to mention the bronze castings. This impeccably composed and technically flawless sculpture lives on a vibration and great vitality, enriched by the elegance and light irony of the author. TAGS: Furniture paintings works of art

Barcaglia / MILANO white marble NOTE An early work, Barcaglia showed his Amore Accieca (a version without drapery) at the 1875 Esposizione Fiorentina, where it won the gran medaglia d'oro. The warm reception it received resulted in his sending to the International Exhibition in Philadelphia the following year, two groups entitled Soap Ball and Fleeting Time which were equally well received.
