Henoch (Henryk) Barczynski, born in Lodz in 1896, was a Jewish Polish painter, graphic artist and illustrator. In 1912-1914 he studied at the Jakub Katsenbogen art school in Lodz. He later became a student of Henryk (Enrico) Glicenstein in Warsaw. In 1919-1924 he attended the Academy of Fine Art in Dresden. He was associated with the Jung Jidysz artistic group in Lodz, a group of Jewish avant-garde artists and writers who operated between 1918 and 1921. In 1925 he won first prize for a poster he designed on behalf of the International Red Cross. Barczynski traveled to France, Spain and Italy, spent a few months in Paris and Prague and lived in Berlin during the years 1927-1933. In 1933 he returned to Lodz, where he lived until settling in Tomaszow-Mazowiecki in 1939. In 1940 Barczynski was interred in the Lodz Ghetto. During an attempt to escape from the ghetto in 1941, he was murdered by the Nazis. With an artistic style influenced by Marc Chagall and Oscar Kokoschka, Barczynski was motivated to paint subjects related to the religious and daily life of Polish Jews. He painted in oils and watercolors and practiced copper plate engraving and etching. His works have been exhibited in Berlin, Dresden, Tel Aviv, New York and Lodz, and some of them reside in museum collections in Israel.
