          Oil on canvas mounted to masonite. Hudson River scene shows the steamboat traveling right to left through calm water under a sunset sky. The steamboat is shown with a central smoking stack, multiple masts and flags. The boat's name flag and U.S. flag off stern. Eight men are seen on the twin decks, one atop the wheelhouse hoisting a flag near a golden eagle flagpole top. The name of the boat is at mid-ship and there is movement shown by the spray at the bow and stern. Signed lower right, "drawn & painted by J. Bard N.Y. 1882/162 Perry St.". Housed in a magnificent antique style modern frame with gilt title and name plaque. On verso is a Museum of American Folk Art exhibition label, October 28 - November 2, 1980. Also an exhibition label from the Hudson River Museum 6/4/77- 9/11/77. SIZE: 30" x 50". Overall 42" x 62". PROVENANCE: Private Maine/Texas Collector.           PORTRAIT OF THE USS ISAAC SMITH AFTER JAMES BARD (NEW YORK, 1815-1897). Oil on pine panel, unsigned. Shows the steamship during its early commercial service on the Hudson River. Age split with inpainting. 7"h. 13.5"w., in a frame, 12"h. 18.5"w. The Isaac Smith served in the Union Navy from 1861-1863, mostly in the the South Atlantic Blockade. It was the only ship to be captured by land troops.

          JAMES BARD (AMERICAN 1815-1897). THE PADDLEWHEEL STEAMBOAT "NANTASKET."

          Originally built for the Boston & Hingham Steamboat Company, the "Nantasket" spent her later years making runs between New York City and Haverstraw on the Hudson River. The painting depicts the builder handing the boat's papers to the owner on the upper deck. Oil on canvas, 30 x 50 inches. Inscribed "Painted by Bard 1858" l.r. and "Built by Thomas Collyer N.Y. 1857" l.l. Provenance: The Elwin M. Eldredge Collection, 1940; The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia; Sotheby's New York, June 21, 1996, lot 542. Literature: Listed in Anthony J. Peluso, Jr. "The Bard Brothers: Painting America Under Steam and Sail," p. 169. An almost identical Bard portrait of the "Nantasket," in the collection of the Shelburne Museum, is illustrated in Peluso, "J.&J. Bard: Picture Painters," p. 74.
