      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

MARTHA WEST BARE (American, 1864-1940) Still Life with Chrysanthemums in an Oriental Vase, circa 1885 Oil on canvas 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Signed lower right: M. Bare FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Little is known about the talented 19th-century still-life painter, Martha West Bare of Philadelphia, whose few known works bear a strong resemblance to those of Milne Ramsey, another Philadelphian with whom she may have trained. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1888-1890, at the National Academy of Design in 1890, and at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1895 she married Russell T. Boswell, a lawyer of note, and in the 1900 census, at age 36, they are listed in Philadelphia. Her obituary states: "The couple moved to Washington, D.C. about 1926, shortly after her husband was appointed an attorney for the Department of the Interior." Her known artwork seems to pre-date her marriage.
