Jones (1874-1956) was a Houston based politician, entrepreneur, publisher and banker. A true "Texas Tycoon," his business savvy was likely a lifesaver during the Great Depression for his employees. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones are documented philanthropists, having donated to colleges and universities intending to aid students in need, including women and people of color. Establishing the Houston Endowment in 1937 to manage the magnitude of their Texas-sized philanthropic social work and financial gifts, which are comparable to Houston's legendary First Lady of Texas, Ima Hogg.       John Barger b. 1953 “Springtime in Texas” 30 x 40 oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Excellent Condition. John Barger blends a style of impressionism and naturalism to create landscapes intended to bring out the majesty of his subjects and to invite the viewer to experience the play between color and light of what the artist regards as an exquisite moment in time. John Barger credits his evolution as an artist to the French impressionist Claude Monet, American master George Inness, and Texas artist Porfirio Salinas. A.C. Cook, noted historian and collector of early Texas art and owner of "The Hock Shop Collection" says of John Barger: "I have known John Barger for many years; I consider him to be without a doubt the finest contemporary Texas landscape artist." Mr. Cook goes on to say, "John Barger compares favorably to the great masters from the 1920's and the 1930's, which was a gold era in Texas art." John Barger received his art degree from the University of Texas. He has traveled and studied art extensively in Mexico and Europe. His paintings can be found in numerous corporate collections, prestigious private collections, as well as fine art galleries. John's painting, Spirit of Texas, is included in the permanent art collection housed in the state capital in Austin. He has been featured in Southwest Art magazine; he is listed in Davenport's Art Reference, The Official Price Guide to Fine Arts, and in the Red Book-American Western Art Price Index.
