      Peter Barker-Mill (1908-1994) ''Haute Ecole'' Signed in pencil, inscribed and numbered 6/45, a linocut print See illustration The lot is sold with a copy of Claude Flight's booklet on lino cutting & printing, Batsford 1934, where the print is illustrated on page 3. Peter Barker- Mill attended the avant garde Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London during the early 1930's and became a protégé of Claude Flight. Following this, he attended the Academie Andre Lhote in Paris. He showed paintings and prints at The London Group, The New English Art Club and several London Galleries. His work also attracted the attention of Christopher Sandford who ran the Golden Cockerel Press and who became pivotal in commissioning Barker- Mill to produce wood engravings for the Golden Cockerel Press books, and many illustrations for the Kelmscott Press. In 1965 Barker -Mill became the first chairman of the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. He was a great philanthropist and overall patron of the contemporary arts. In 1989 the Arnolfini showed a retrospective of his work. The Manchester City Art Gallery purchased a copy of ''Haute Ecole'' in 1937, which now forms part of the permanent collection.

      Thomas Stearns for Venini, an 'Incalmo' welded glass cylindrical vase, designed in 1962, in green, clear and anthracite bands, three-line acid stamp 'Venini Murano Italia', 25cm high Provenance: From the estate of Peter Barker-Mill (1908-1994). From just before the Second World War he and his wife, Caroline (d. 2007) lived at Wookey House, Wookey Hole, near Wells, Somerset which was decorated in the avant-garde style of time. According to The Times of September 5, 2008 'During the 1960s and 1970s the Barker-Mills were at the forefront of the UK arts scene, hosting large parties for their creative friends. During this time many of these came to stay for long periods. One Polish painter, Tadeusz Piotr Potworowski, lived for many months in the outhouse'. Barker-Mill was an abstract artist in oil, gouache, wood engraving and sculpture. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol in the early sixties
