        • Thomas Barker of Bath - Hilly landscape with travelling figures on donkeys under cloudy skies and travelling figures in a sunset landscape with a tower and the sea beyond
          Feb. 27, 2024

          Thomas Barker of Bath - Hilly landscape with travelling figures on donkeys under cloudy skies and travelling figures in a sunset landscape with a tower and the sea beyond

          Est: £4,000 - £6,000

          Thomas Barker of Bath,  British 1769-1847 Hilly landscape with travelling figures on donkeys under cloudy skies; and travelling figures in a sunset landscape with a tower and the sea beyond;  oil on canvas, each bears label inscribed 'Thos Barker of Bath 1769-1847' attached to the reverse of the frame, 43.2 x 63.7 cm., two (2).  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present works are classic examples of the bucolic, romanticised landscapes for which Barker was known and celebrated. Barker's approach was heavily influenced by the landscapes of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), particularly in his use of loose, free brushstrokes to evoke a sense of movement, evident in the swirling clouds in the skies of one of the present works. The present compositions are typical of Barker, with small, rustic figures set against an idealised pastoral landscape which expands beyond. This pair also exhibits Barker's range, in his ability to evoke the heaviness of a dark, blustery day, with equal skill as the bright calm of a quiet sunset, with still, glassy seas stretching into the distance. A similar work by Barker, with diminutive figures in a vast wooded landscape, under stormy skies, sold at Christie's, New York, 3 October 2001 (lot 74) for $16,000.

          Nov. 16, 2022

          Thomas Barker of Bath, British 1769-1847 The shepherdess;

          Est: £800 - £1,200

          Thomas Barker of Bath, British 1769-1847 The shepherdess; oil on canvas, 59.6 x 47.5 cm. Provenance: with Sara Cullinan Gallery, Swaffham.; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 29 September 1993, lot 528. Note: Barker of Bath was particularly celebrated as a painter of landscapes and scenes of rural life. Many of his paintings exhibit similarities to those of his contemporaries such as George Morland (1763-1804) and his more expansive landscapes generally gesture towards the influence of earlier classical landscape artists of whom Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was a leading figure. The present work, however, is unusual for the artist. Whereas his figures are typically relegated to small-scale staffage within his landscapes, here he assigns the shepherdess the central focus of the scene, with the scenery behind very much secondary in importance.

          Jul. 19, 2022

          Circle of Thomas Barker of Bath,

          Est: £350 - £550

          Circle of Thomas Barker of Bath, British 1769-1847- A wooded landscape on the edge of a lake; oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: This artist's skilled execution of a romanticised lake-side landscape is likely influenced by the landscape compositions of Thomas Barker of Bath, who would at times similarly adopt unusual close-cropped vantage points, rather than the sweeping views more typical of the likes of Richard Wilson (1713-1782) a century earlier (see 'Hampton Rocks, Morning' by Thomas Barker held by the Victoria Gallery, Bath, no.BATVG:P:1985.1). The present work portrays a distant vista, yet viewed from a foreground area rendered immediately in front of the viewer, thus serving to invite the audience into the natural world. The prominent central rock is an unusual compositional device which both vertically splits the landscape in two between the foreground and distant landscape, and animates the otherwise relatively static scene. Relined. Cleaned, revarnished and retouched. The canvas is taut on the stretcher and sits well in the frame. Some settled craquelure. A few areas of slightly more heightened craquelure with associated minor losses of paint, including in the lower left corner to the right of the small tree, in the upper left corner in the tree foliage, and two small flaked losses in the central tree foliage upper centre. Some minor marks and surface dirt. The areas of impasto remain, and the painted details are well preserved. Even varnish and fresh colours. Under UV lamp, extensive heightening and retouching to areas in the tree foliage, ground and sky (see images). Overall in good retouched condition. Not examined out of frame.
