After High School graduation he attended the Fleisher Art School and the Philadelphia Museum School of Art before being drafted into the U.S. Army to fight in World War II. He worked as a free-lance artist while teaching at the Philadelphia Museum School and the Moore College of Art. Over the course of his career, Barnett produced work in numerous kinds of media, including acrylic, charcoal, oil, pen and ink, watercolor, bronze, marble, and lithography. His works appeared in National Geographic, Life, Reader's Digest, the Saturday Evening Post, and more.
