      • PORTRAIT OF EMMA CALVE BY ALICE PIKE BARNEY (AMERICAN, 1857-1931).
        May. 23, 2009

PORTRAIT OF EMMA CALVE BY ALICE PIKE BARNEY (AMERICAN, 1857-1931).

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

PORTRAIT OF EMMA CALVE BY ALICE PIKE BARNEY (AMERICAN, 1857-1931). Oil on canvas, signed upper left. Portrait of the opera singer, Calvey, as Carmen. 36 1/2"h. 24"w., in a gilt frame, 42 3/4"h. 29 1/2"w. Barney was a Cincinnati-born artist who spent most of her career in Washington, DC. She trained in Paris under James A.M. Whistler, and it was while she was his student, probably between 1898 and 1900, that she painted the portrait of Calve. Calve was an operatic superstar during the Belle Epoque. She sang at major venues around the world, most famously in the title role of Georges Bizet's Carmen. It is in this role that she is depicted in the portrait by her friend Barney. According to correspondence between the Robbins Hunter Museum (Granville, Ohio) the Alice Pike Barney Studio House in Washington, DC (now the Latvian Embassy), the portrait was originally gifted to Grace and George Siebold of Washington by the artist on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The portrait then passed to their daughter in Virginia, and then to the home of Siebold granddaughter, Jean McDaniel of Granville, Ohio. Mrs. McDaniel donated the painting to the Robbins Hunter Museum in 1988, and it is now being sold to benefit the museum. Additional research is included with the lot.
