      AFTER WILLIAM HOGARTH (c.1746)

      Est: £200 - £300

AFTER WILLIAM HOGARTH (c.1746) AFTER WILLIAM HOGARTH (c.1746) Marriage à-la-Mode Plates I, 2,3,4,5,6 (plate 4, A/F) Invented, painted and published by William Hogarth 1746 by LOUIS GERARD SCOTIN, BORN 1690 (PLATES 1 AND 6), BERNARD BARON, 1696-1762 (PLATES 2 AND 3) AND SIMON FRANCIS RAVENET, 1706-1774 (PLATES 4 AND 5) The six prints forming Marriage à-la-Mode are based on oil paintings by Hogarth now in the National Gallery. Unlike his previous printed sets, Hogarth employed other printmakers to engrave the plates. In doing so, he implied that his paintings were comparable to the works of the finest artists, which were being copied in the sort of reproductive prints the engravers he had selected were known for.

    • 18th Century Hand Colored Engraving of William Hogarth's Lord of Winchester
      Dec. 03, 2017

18th Century Hand Colored Engraving of William Hogarth's Lord of Winchester

      Est: $300 - $600

Very Fine 18th century engraving of the portrait of Dr. Benjamin Hoadley, Lord of Winchester painted by William Hogarth (1697 – 1764), and engraved by Bernard Baron (1696 – 1762) in 1743 | Engraving is fine detail with hand coloring throughout | Beautifully matted and framed in gold gilt frame | Measures image only 17″h x 12″w, overall size including frame 30.5″h x 25.25″w. Benjamin Hoadly (14 November 1676 – 17 April 1761) was an English clergyman, who was successively Bishop of Bangor, of Hereford, of Salisbury, and finally of Winchester. He is best known as the initiator of the Bangorian Controversy. Lord Hoadly was educated at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge and ordained a priest in 1700. He was rector of St Peter-le-Poor, London, from 1704 to 1724, and of St Leonard’s, Streatham, from 1710 to 1723. His participation in controversy began at the beginning of his career, when he advocated conformity of the religious rites from the Scottish and English churches for the sake of union. He became a leader of the low church and found favour with the Whig party. He battled with Francis Atterbury, who was the spokesman for the high church group and Tory leader on the subject of passive obedience and non-resistance (i.e. obedience of divines that would not involve swearing allegiance or changing their eucharistic rites but would also not involve denunciation of the Established Church practices). The House of Commons, dominated by Whigs, recommended him to Queen Anne, and he became rector of Streatham in 1710. When George I succeeded to the throne, he became chaplain to the King and made bishop of Bangor in 1716. In 1717, his sermon on “The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ” provoked the Bangorian controversy. He was then translated three more times, taking up different bishoprics. He maintained that the eucharist was purely a commemorative act without any divine intervention. During his time as bishop, he rarely visited his dioceses and lived, instead, in London, where he was very active in politics. From later summer 1722 to January 1725 Hoadly published letters on contemporary topics, articulating his Whig principles and defending the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The Revolution had created “that Limited Form of Government which is our only Security” and such a government secured freedom of expression, without which Britons would suffer “all the Mischiefs, of Darkness in the Intellectual World, of Baseness in the Moral World, and of Slavery in the Political World”. Hoadly also criticised the Pretender, who issued a declaration that he would extinguish opposition. Hoadly wrote that he would impose uniformity on all if he ruled: “Not only that he must destroy your Civil and Religious Rights, but that he plainly before-hand has here told You, to your Face, He will do so”. William Hogarth (1697–1764) painted his portrait as Bishop of Winchester and “Prelate of the Most Noble Order of the Garter” about 1743, etched by Bernard Baron (1696–1762). Hoadly’s son Benjamin aided Hogarth with his The Analysis of Beauty.

Veüe prise sur le Bord, ou à la Têste du Lac.' ' Publish'd by S. Bridgeman May 12. 1739. ' 13 1/4 x 19 1/4" ( apeture) in a Hogarth frame. A pleasure cruise or ferryboat on the lake at Stowe House, Buckinghamshire, with three smaller rowing boats surrounding. A fountain in the background, the park with the house in the distance on the left shore. Stowe was begun by Sir Richard Temple in 1676, his family having risen from sheep farmers under Elizabeth I. Over the next century, Viscount Cobham and then Earl Temple (Cobham's Grenville nephew) rebuilt it into the great classical show house and landscape which still amazes visitors today. Numerous famous architects worked at Stowe House and Gardens. Among them were Sir John Vanbrugh , William Kent , James Gibbs , Robert Adam , Thomas Pitt and Sir John Soane , making Stowe one of the most important houses and estates in the country. The house is now part of Stowe School, founded in 1923. Plate 12 to the series 'Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire' published by Sarah Bridgeman , wife of Charles Bridgeman who in 1733-34 commissioned Jacques Rigaud and Bernard Baron to engrave some views of Stowe.
