      JOSEPH R. BARR (American, 20th Century) "THE SUMMIT".

      Est: $500 - $1,000

      Oil on canvasboard scene shows a dirt path/road ending at the top of a mountain with rock cliffs and tree. Signed lower right "Joe Barr". Retaining its original Salmagundi Club Thumb-box Exhibition label. Housed in probably its original Newcomb-Macklin Co. frame which retains its original label. SIZE: 9" x 12". PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from the estate of Caroline Wetmore Davidson Hiles (Warren, Pennsylvania - Brooklyn Heights, New York), to the present owner, a great-grand-daughter.  After the death of her second husband, Mrs. Hiles, a suffragette, put her three sons in private schools and spent the rest of her life traveling the world by steamer with her English lady companion, Rose Pasco, and a cockatoo named Van Heemskerk. CONDITION: Good, some paint loss in small areas. 9-94925
