Francis James Barraud (English, 1856-1924). 'His Masters Voice'. Lithograph on Canvas

        Est: $500 - $1,000

Francis James Barraud. 'His Masters Voice', Lithograph on Canvas Francis James Barraud (English,1856 - 1924), 'His Master's Voice, 192'. Lithograph on canvas having printed signature. This is the first printed version of the original oil on canvas.  His Master's Voice was the name of a major british record label created in 1901 by the Gramophone Co. Ltd. The phrase was coined in the late 1890's as the title of a painting depicting a terrier-mix dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone. In the original, unmodified, 1898 painting, the dog was listening to a cylinder phonograph. The painting was also a famous trademark and logo of the victor talking machine company, later known as RCA Victor. Barraud was first exhibited by the royal academy in 1881, with a portrait of George Rose, his maternal uncle, being one of his compositions. He would become a regular exhibitor at the academy, as well as other institutions, including the institute of painters in oil colours.

Colour lithograph on cardboard England, around 1900 Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft (German Gramophone Society) Design by Francis James Barraud (1856-1924) - British painter 38.5 cm (height); 57.5 cm (length) The logo for "His Master's Voice" was designed by the British painter Francis James Barraud and was initially used by various record companies. The artist dog, Nipper, is depicted listening to the sounds of a phonograph, but when the German Gramophone Society bought the rights to the image, they changed it to a Berlin gramophone. In 1909 the company started applying the logo to their records. Due to a further sell of the trademark the logo became famous worldwide. The die-cut advertising display sign shows traces of age and wear, such as small holes and remnants of adhesive on the reverse due to a previous mounting. There is slight damaging to the gramophone. The measurements are 38.5 cm (height) and 57.5 cm (length) Francis James Barraud (1856-1924) Francis James Barraud was a British painter, whose most famous work has been one of the best-known commercial logos worldwide. The painting depicts the artist's dog Nipper listening to music. In 1899 the work was bought by the German Gramophone Company, who initially used it in advertising. Today, the logo is recognised worldwide.
