            Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Untitled Centerpiece Candelabra mixed media H: 19” (48 cm) L: 16” (41 cm) W: 67” (170 cm) PROVENANCE: León Gallery, The Kingly Treasures Auction 2013, Makati City, 7 December 2013, Lot 138 WRITE UP Gabriel Barredo is a Filipino artist best known for his sculptures and mixed-media installations. His monumental, immersive mixed-media installations and assemblages have been the focal point of numerous solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally. Moreover, he pioneered kinetic sculpture in the Philippines, establishing himself as a formidable and pivotal figure in his chosen field. For Barredo, an artwork is a spectacle that exists to be displayed. Crafted with unparalleled rigor and meticulous craftsmanship, Barredo’s works are not meant to be hidden or confined in small spaces. This colossal centerpiece candle holder, skillfully crafted with swirls of unconventional materials, is a testament to his unique and intriguing artistry. His inimitable practice challenges the limits and possibilities of art. Barredo’s work process includes months of bricolage, sketching, and painting, employing a plethora of found objects such as rods of electric fan covers, windshields, paper, wrought-iron, antique radios, coconut husks, bottle caps, bed springs, fire-hose coils, conveyor belts, wooden beads, and computer and refrigerator parts. His ingenious utilization of these materials and whimsical themes, such as the juxtaposition of the mundane and the extraordinary, adds to his eccentric yet original practice of crafting. PROPERTY FROM THE MARITESS MENDOZA PINEDA COLLECTION Suite of Salon Furniture Suite of Salon Furniture aluminum, steel, resin and iron round table: H: 29" (74 cm) D: 45" (114 cm) chairs: 50" x 19" x 19" (127 cm x 48 cm x 48 cm) each wall mirror: 45" x 35 1/2" (114 cm x 90 cm) Within the context of Philippine art and its artworld, the mainstream populace is more likely to attribute the medium of painting, sketches, and even prints to the term fine art. Despite having existed since the pre-colonial period through primarily ritualistic, religious, and even utilitarian purposes, sculptures often do not occupy the same level of mainstream popularity as other media. Regardless, sculpture has enjoyed much conceptual rigor and experimentation as much as other forms of art, and here in the Philippines, no one has contributed to the novel exploration of the medium within recent memory as much as Gabriel Barredo. Barredo's artistic style defies easy categorization, as his installations defy conventional notions of medium and form. He seamlessly combines found objects, organic materials, mechanical components, and even taxidermy, constructing intricate and immersive environments. His works often take on labyrinthine structures, where viewers navigate through a maze of objects, each laden with symbolism and meaning. Barredo's meticulous attention to detail creates a palpable sense of awe and intrigue. His installations frequently incorporate discarded objects and remnants of the past, resurrecting them as potent symbols of collective memory. Through his manipulation of these objects, Barredo challenges our preconceptions, prompting contemplation about the transient nature of life and the legacy we leave behind. (J.D.)

Gabriel Barredo (1957 - 2020) Light dated 2008 rubber, fiber glass, aluminum, metal, acrylic, bulb 51 1/2" x 11 1/4" x 10 1/4" (131 cm x 29 cm x 26 cm) each EXHIBITED Soka Art, Visions, Beijing, July 26 - August 4, 2008 The saying “one man’s trash trash is another man’s treasure” is undoubtedly personified by the works of Filipino mixed media artist Gabriel Barredo. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Barredo’s artistic practice has evolved into a seemingly theatrical display of found objects, mixed media, and other ephemera molded into otherworldly and surreal sculptures and installations. The contents of his sculptures include rods of electric fan covers, broken particles of car windshields, wood, paper, wrought-iron, antique radios, coconut husks, bottle caps, bed springs, fire-hose coils, conveyor belts, wooden beads, computer and refrigerator parts, cement grinders and other original materials to create a feast for the senses out of mundane objects. Given the nature of Barredo’s practice, one can argue that Barredo was one of the foremost practitioners of Maximalism in the Philippines. Unlike Minimalism, which is undoubtedly not only alive in Philippine art but in both Modern and Contemporary movements, Maximalism is not often looked at through much of an academic and critical lens. Despite this, the term is often used to describe an aesthetic of excess. In contrast to Minimalism’s insistence that less is more, Maximalism touts that more is indeed more. By being redundant, overtly complex, and excessive, one can see the richness and depth of art and design through its possibilities. Such is undeniably seen in Barredo’s art, whose excessive use showcases how a succinct vision is not muddled by how much material is utilized. (J.D.)

Untitled mixed media 27" x 12" x 15" (68 cm x 30 cm x 38 cm) An artist well known for his sculptures and other mixed media presentations, Gabriel Barredo uses found objects as materials and structure to bring a new life to his art pieces. Each of his sculpture pieces mix together various elements of cultural and religious themes with recycled components of different reused objects that range from large to small and still manages to convey beautiful works with deeper meaning and emotions. This particular piece is no different, in that Barredo continues to use his signature style and technique of found materials integrated into his sculptures. The piece itself shows a man in a crucified position against the face of a woman decorated in a crown of ornaments and jewelry looking down on him from a bright circular background. Two smaller faces are placed on both sides below the crucified man as the base of the piece is surrounded with crucifixes. It depicts religious imagery and a hint of southeast Asian cultural elements. Metal pieces of screws, wires, springs, and other pieces found from a lamp have been shaped together to create this scene. Barredo shows his skill by having a dynamic of realism through the use of reused materials that emphasize the raw and heavier religious meanings being conveyed from the artwork itself. Works such as this show the deeper understanding and complex techniques that Gabriel Barredo is known for.

Everyday objects turned into a parade of familiar and peculiar images; in a profile interview, he explains, “I have this forte for using found objects, because early on I couldn’t afford to buy the right materials, so I improvise.” Hence, from building them through months of bricolage, sketching, and painting, elevating his sculptures to almost theatrical lengths, immersive for the viewer, featuring numerous large and small pieces, some are simple drawings, others motorized, along with object-led side narratives - with all of it accompanied by sound and light - his works pulsated with the audiences’ heartbeat, then dragged it faster, encouraging the viewers to rethink form, structure and experience. Barredo’s works were meant to create entire opuses.

From complex assemblages to monumental installations, Barredo’s art is far from conventional. Barredo’s works also often utilize a number of non-traditional and unorthodox materials such as windshields, wood, paper, wrought-iron, antique radios, coconut husks, bottle caps, fire-hoses, conveyor belts, wooden beads, computer and refrigerator parts, and cement. These uncommon materials add to Barredo’s eccentric yet wholly original practice which often explores the idea of beauty and how it ultimately affects our own aesthetic experience. Among his unique creations, it is arguably his kinetic sculptures that the artist is most known and celebrated for. In a medium that is mostly known for being static and immovable, Barredo manages to reinvent the wheel by implementing motion into his pieces. This particular piece titled Tree of Life showcases Barredo at his best. Each facet of the work meticulously works together with each other. Barredo’s unique assemblage makes sure not even the smallest detail is left out or forgotten. As Barredo’s work buzzes to life, the viewer is reminded both of the unique expressiveness of motion, and the fact that such an experience cannot be replicated or created by anyone except Barredo himself.

Gabriel Barredo (b. 1960) Untitled (Tabernacle) mixed media 62” x 85” x 9” (158 cm x 216 cm x 23 cm) Gabriel Barredo was in a league of his own, refusing to let technique and style limit what he can and will do. His works are more than art; they are spectacles, condensed into their purest experiential form. Sometimes, this would mean large pieces and exhibits the size of a city block, like his 1999 exhibit that called for the closure of UN Avenue. But sometimes, Barredo would condense his temperament for spectacle in little lifeworlds which he’d adorn his famous otherworldly yet enchanting sculptures. Aside from his found-object mixed-media pieces, Barredo also experimented with highly detailed furniture art which featured a number of baroque-inspired elements. This particular piece is a perfect example of the artist’s unique assemblage of pieces and elements. Traditional religious art and images are juxtaposed with intricately fashioned metallic elements and carved motifs. Despite its seemingly exaggerated visual proportions, Barredo is able to maintain a certain aesthetic flow that allows this theoretically chaotic piece to effortlessly present itself as a cohesive whole— effectively offering the viewer a rich tapestry of both conventional and contemporary visual elements free from confusion or pretension.
