Ben Barrell Sold at Auction Prices

My fascination with creating shapes began in childhood. I was lucky enough to join a Saturday morning art club where I was able to create plaster and concrete casts. My first major project was creating a scale model of the farm I lived on in North Cornwall. Playtime was always an outside affair for me, either on the farm or along the beautiful coast that lay beneath it. This triggered my intrigue with the Ocean and the stunning, rugged Cornish landscape.

Later on, I became immersed in sailing and surfing. I would watch the shapes thrown by the Atlantic Ocean as waves rolled up, sea creatures cut through its waters and yachts sailed elegantly across its horizon. My visual memories and sketches of these dynamic shapes translated into the physical forms I created back then and continue to make now. I studied sculpture at Bristol Polytechnic in the early nineties and have been creating sculpture ever since.

Designed by Robert Myers, a four times gold medal winner at Chelsea, his theme of "Enlighten" celebrates how the work of Cancer Research UK has increased our knowledge and understanding of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Robert explores this theme through concepts of discovery, light and shade, colour and contrast within the garden, taking visitors on a journey full of contrasting environments. Following the success of his pebble seats in last year's Cancer Research Chelsea garden, Ben Barrell, was delighted to be asked by Robert Myers to create the sculpture "Enlightenment" for the show garden as all his work is inspired by nature and the shapes created by its movements. Living in Cornwall, Ben has the ideal surroundings to create work which reflects the rhythm of the sea, the movement of creatures passing through the sea and the landscape of the Cornish coast. His work can be found at Goodwood Sculpture Park and in public spaces and private gardens.
