Mostra del Sindicato Interprovincial Fascista Belle Arti di Lombardia, Milan, 1936 (exhibition label on verso); Erma Bossi. Eine Spurensuche, Schlossmuseum Murnau, 25.6.-3.11. 2013 Provenance: Private Collection, Dresden Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 40,000 Euro Erma Bossi created this painting in her Milan studio in the late 1930s. A photograph testifies the origin of this work, showing the artist standing before the scaffold, on which our painting is set (Archivio Carla Pellegrini, Milan), looking towards the viewer with a mischievous smile. The painting depicts a young man in a red, traditional costume, which is reminiscent of a Spanish bullfighter, captured with volatile brushstrokes. Condition: The painting is in good condition. The left side was trimmed, leaving only a part of the signature. Occasional small retouching in the margins visible under UV light. Tiny pinhole in the upper center, slight marginal blemishes, otherwise of good impression. The image dimensions are 71.5 x 45 cm, the frame dimensions 93 x 67 cm. Literature: Erma Bossi – Eine Spurensuche, Exhibition- Cat. Schlossmuseum Murnau, July 25 - November 3 2013, pp. 162-163 (Ill.). Erma Barrera-Bossi (1875-1952) According to the current state of research Erma Bossi was born 9th of June 1875 in Pula on the Istrian peninsula and died in 1952 in Cesano Boscone. She studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts around 1905. There she became acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, who in 1909 admitted her in the artist association ‘Neue Künstlervereinigung München’ and ‘Blauer Reiter’. A painting by Gabriele Münter titled ‘Kandinsky and Erma Bossi at the table’ from 1909/10 bares witness to these common years, which is kept in the collection of the Schlossmuseum Murnau. From 1910-14 Erma Bossi spent some time in Paris, where she exhibited in the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. After that she settled in Milan, where she participated in the exhibitions of the Novecento in Milan in 1926 and 1929 and the Venice Biennale in 1930, among others.
