      Roderic Barrett,  British 1920-2000 -  Don Q and Sancho P, c.1948;  oil on board, signed and titled to label attached to the reverse and with another inscribed artist's label visible beneath this, 44.7 x 22.8 cm (ARR)  Note: Roderic Barrett made a series of works on the Don Quixote theme, the 17th century Spanish epic by Miguel de Cervantes, beginning in the 1940s and continuing into the 1950s. The subject allowed the artist to explore folklore, symbolism and myth in his own highly individual vision. Barrett was given his first solo show in 1948 at The Hilton Gallery, Cambridge, which included works on this theme. The artist became president of the Colchester Art Society, succeeding Cedric Morris. The group also included John Nash and Arthur Letts-Haines.

      § Roderic Barrett (British, 1920-2000) Attenders - Mother with baby betwixt light and darkness - good and evil signed with monogram upper right-hand corner "RB" oil on board h:120 w: 151 cm Provenance: Private collection, Suffolk, and bought directly from the artist circa 1960 by the vendor's late father-in-law. Roderic Barrett studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London. Initially he supported his family with teaching appointments in London, first as a part-time instructor at the Central School of Art (1947-68), then as tutor at the Royal Academy Schools at Burlington House (1968-96). From early on, he was involved with the Colchester Arts Society, along with John and Paul Nash. In 1982, he succeeded Sir Cedric Morris as its president, a position he held until his death.
