This is an American marine painting by William Sterna Barrett. He was born in Rockport, Maine in 1854. His father was a ship builder and William developed a love for the sea. As he grew older, he worked on location and vowed not to become a studio painter like Winslow Homer. He wanted to paint the sea in a realistic, truthful manner, but didn't feel he was good enough, so in 1882 he moved to New York, then to Paris, to seek professional training. He moved back to Rockport in 1889 and studied with William Merritt Chase. Chase encouraged him to follow the styles of Turner, Constable and Whistler. Barrett became an academic painter who could apply layers of translucent color in an impressionistic manner to achieve the see-through effect of sea water. He often applied many layers of opaque paint washes to create a sense of movement and local weather conditions. He taught marine painting to students in Brooklyn, New York, and insisted they comprehend everything possible about subject matter before attempting to paint it. Critics have praised his marine paintings, even though he shunned publicity. In 1898 he left the National Academy to exhibit independently with a group called "The Ten American Painters". In 1902 they organized "The Brooklyn Ten", which became the "The Society of Brooklyn Painters" the following year. In 1903, Barrett and two other fellow artists founded the Brooklyn New School of Art, where Barrett taught marine painting until 1920. His sole purpose as a painter was to record nature truthfully in and around the sea. Barrett's will stated that all of his artwork was to be destroyed when he died, but that request was never fulfilled. He wanted to die at sea, but died in a bathtub at home in Rockport, Maine. This marine painting is an oil on canvas with a moonlight scene. There's a lighthouse on the left, a ship in the background, and waves that suggest a rough night at sea. The painting is framed and signed in red in the lower left. Overall size is 21 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches and the sight size is 17 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. .
