Born in Manila, Barrioquinto’s artistic journey was significantly shaped during his formative years in Hong Kong, where he attended the Royden House School. His return to the Philippines culminated in his degree in Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas, where he laid the foundations of his artistic exploration. His early works were characterized by distorted and jagged visual elements, rendered with an almost surreal, dark disposition. These artworks were emotionally charged, driven by the inner turmoil that Barrioquinto sought to convey. They presented viewers with a glimpse into a world of deep emotions and haunting imagery. However, Barrioquinto’s artistic journey did not stop there. He transitioned towards a style that combined hyperrealism with a sense of surrealism. During this phase, his portraits took on a unique balance between subdued colors and whimsical elements. In this particular piece, one can see his relatively recent interest in traditional Japanese artmaking. From the act of referencing Japanese woodblock prints to his fascination with Japanese imagery, it is hard to deny the influence the style has had on him. Yet, even in this transformation, the artist’s darker disposition was not entirely relinquished. Muted colors, elements of decay, and an underlying sense of detachment often found their way into these newer works. While pursuing art at the University of the Philippines, he sharpened his abilities and created a style that combines traditional and contemporary elements. For instance, Barrioquinto has built a loyal fanbase because of his oeuvre of hyper-realistic women's portraits embellished with and surrounded by flora and fauna. Works such as The Fleeting Moment (2014), Swing (2016), and Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets (2019) show how he portrays his women subjects in a surrealistic manner. As seen from these works and Screaming from the sky 1, Barrioquinto has a personal Pop style that integrates elements from the iconography of Baroque with Japanese woodcuts. Moreover, what adds to the interest to this lot is that the circular painting is in stark contrast with its deep, black square frame. An article called, “The Bad, the Dark, and the Ugly: The Beauty of Andres Barrioquinto’s Work” mentioned that Barrioquinto has taken to personally choosing and even “hewing the frames that hold his own portraits.” Because of the lot’s black frame, the eyes of the viewers are more drawn to the elements present in the painting. The touches of gray and white in the snow- capped mountains also complement the spiked, stone- looking object. The Japanese women stand out the most because of their colorful kimonos and their black hair that coheres with the frame. Overall, Screaming from the sky is intriguing given its different aspects and figures. From his earlier and more figurative earlier works to his more recent hyperrealistic outings, Barrioquinto manages to successfully mold and utilize the human face as a site of expression. But what makes this piece both rare and unique is that it is among the few self-portraits produced by Barrioquinto. One might think that either the practice of self-portraiture is either something similar to other kinds of portraiture, or that it is an act of vanity among other things. But one can view the practice as something that springs forth or fosters self-awareness. Throughout the process, the artist is put into a position of self-reflection as they are caught within the web of producing a work that must choose whether it should represent how they see themselves or how the world sees them. Such is implied in this work wherein Barrioquinto creates a work that also brings in his fascination with Japanese and other eastern aesthetics. Barrioquinto notes that “I take some ideas from my past shows that I modify to create something new. That’s why if you look through my old and new paintings, you’ll find some concepts that I’ve done before. His ability to shift creatively through different painting styles while preserving his trademark of underlying somberness has continuously captivated audiences worldwide. Owing to his stoicism, Barrioquinto's mind can only be construed from what he demonstrates through his art. In this piece, Barrioquinto evokes an engrossing peculiarity. Typically, the image of a skull represents the harrowing experience of demise. On the contrary, Barrioquinto presents the antithesis of it. He uses the skull to symbolize strength and overcoming challenges. Its bright color represents the "death" of an old life. The dead of night has waned, and life is revitalized; a rebirth has happened. Amid the constant cycle of suffering, the work is a poignant reminder for us to continue living and prospering. The monochromatic flowers, albeit used as the background, set the piece's overall mood. More than a perplexing backdrop, they serve as instruments providing a deeper introspection on the main subject. They encapsulate beauty amid the madness, a struggle between pleasure and misery. After all, our lives are grounded in contradictions that, when combined, result in a fascinating and genuine existence. Barrioquinto shared in a 2021 interview with Lifestyle Asia, "I think challenges are given in life. I think it's in my character to want to embrace these challenges. I was born in struggle, so living in it is just natural for me. Happiness is just a side effect, and it's always fleeting and unpredictable. Find your largest burden to carry, and bear with it."

This particular piece is emblematic of Barrioquinto's more recent outings. Though there are similarities between Barrioquintos second style and his more recent one, Barrioquinto has expanded his art’s potential by diversifying his themes and subjects. Heaven’s Maze is a two panel diptych that seemingly represents a variety of characteristics attributed to the past and the future. The contains a number of layers, but one of its most distinctive elements is Barrioquinto’s inclusion of a man’s torso, as well as an outline containing a variety of images where the man’s head is supposed to be. This unique blend of elements seemingly emphasizes a certain psychological element present within the work. The left panel depicts ideals full of hope and disposition, as evidenced by the lush, classical, and almost folksy background, as well as a number of whimsical elements. In contrast, the right panel features a desolate landscape wherein the lush greenery is replaced by a dry and arid wasteland. Although its other elements still remain whimsical, there is a certain sadness attributed to its treatment, as though it is solemnly and quietly discontent with its current situation. Barrioquinto’s diptych can be seen as a commentary on the current human condition, one that was once fueled by ambition, but now faces quiet desolation. Though a work that utilizes the concept of time, one can ask, where does the present fit in all of this. One can assume that the present is contained within the viewer, actively viewing the work and forever stuck between the two instances Barrioquinto presents us. Thus, rather than a somber work, Heaven’s Maze can be seen as a wake-up call that urges us to find a way out of this seemingly overwhelming and labyrinthine predicament.

Barrioquinto’s visual spectacle contains a melange of components—from exotic animals to exquisite flora, each one rendered in Barrioquinto’s own brand of hyperrealism. Yet, his images, despite their volume, are not jarringly misplaced. Instead, each piece contributes to the otherworldly order that exists within his canvas. Since 2001, he has had more than 20 solo exhibitions across Asia and Europe. Dubbed as “The Dark Man of Philippine Art, his early works had disturbing and peculiar themes. His art has since evolved to a noteworthy style depicting uncanny portraits, dauntlessly altering the compositions in his canvas. Using fine brush strokes in acrylic and oil, Barrioquinto portrays distinguishable faces in soft and restrained hues. His former style of depicting his subjects with a bizarre keynote usually creeps into his recent works, as evident in this particular piece. Enshrouded by a serene impression filled with flora and birds with exuberant tones, he employs traditional Japanese patterns layered with ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period. Nothing much has changed in terms of his themes and subject matter. What he did was to change the composition of his canvas by flooding the portrait with Japanese prints and designs, as explained by Barrioquinto. This resulted in a tattoo-like effect on his works
