JOSEPH CHARLES BARROW (EXH.1789-1802) Shipping off Tarbert, County Kerry Watercolour on paper, 32 x 53.5 cm. (12.6 x 21) Literature: William Laffan (ed.), Painting Ireland: Topographical Views from Glin Castle (Tralee, 2005) pp. 94-96 Barrow was an accomplished watercolour artist, who drew topographical and architectural scenes including Strawberry Hill and Peterborough Cathedral and who taught the young John Varley. The present work is a smaller version by Barrow of one of a pair in the Royal Collection showing Tarbert House, County Kerry. Reduced versions of the pair were formally in the Knight of Glin?s collection at Glin Castle, so close to the scene painted here. Barrow shows a excise cutter and other boats off the coasts of Kerry. Tarbert House is visible just to the left of centre of the composition while on the right can be seen Tarbert battery, a pointed bastion built to protect the coast from French invasion. Tarbert House is still in the ownership of the Leslie family.
