        JOHN BARRY (IRISH 1784-1827) Portrait miniature of Captain Nathaniel Burslem, KH, JP (circa 1769-1856) watercolour on ivory fitted shagreen case, containing inscription, A Miniature of Captain N. Burslem when in the 11th Regiment of Foot painted by Barry, the celebrated Irish Miniature Painter in or about 1793. 50 Guineas he recieved for painting it. oval, 65mm (2 1/2in) high PROVENANCE: Ellison Fine Art, 2002 Captain Burslem was educated at Rugby School. He was appointed an Ensign in the 11th Foot in December 1789 rising to Lieutenant Colonel in the 14th Foot by October 1814. He was appointed to command the 17th Foot in 1826 and afterwards retired from the service by 1829.

        JOHN BARRY (1745 - 1803) Revolutionary War naval officer considered the "Father of the American Navy", he commanded the warship Lexington in 1776, capturing the first British vessel in the war. Later, Barry led volunteers and directed artillery at Trenton. Partly-printed D.S. "John Barry Capt", 1p. 7 3/4" x 5", [n.p., n.d.], certification that the bearer had served upon a vessel under Barry''s command and was therefore entitled to a share of "prize-money" which might accrue to him. Rough margins with an old tape repair on verso causing light toning to Barry''s rank only, else very good.

Later, Barry led volunteers and directed artillery at Trenton. Rare, good content A.L.S. "John Barry", 1p. 4to., Strawberry Hill, Dec. 22, 1792, to Michael M. O'Brian, in small part: "...After all the trouble I have had with our little vessel I am very much disappointed in her not carrying more goods but I hope it is in some measure owing to her being badly stowed...She is a well built little vessel and I am in hopes she will make it up in fast sailing...pay some little attention to my Nephew he is young and as yet I think unacquainted with the vices of the World, with respect to the Com[misio]n I leave it intirely to yourself to settle the matter with your Nephew...". A few marginal chips affect only two letters of text, else very good. Following the Revolution, Barry spent a few years trading commercially before Washington drafted him to build what would become the American Navy.$1,200-1,500
