      • Three Baltimore/Chinese Export Silver Tablespoons
        Jul. 28, 2013

        Three Baltimore/Chinese Export Silver Tablespoons

        Est: $250 - $400

Three Unusual Baltimore Federalist and Chinese Export Silver Tablespoons, fourth quarter 18th century, including one by Standish Barry (1763-1844), Baltimore, Maryland, and two Chinese Export examples by "WF", each with spatulate handle and bright-cut decoration, monogrammed "G", l. 8-1/4", 4.82 total t. oz. Provenance: The estate of Ruth Wilkins Sullivan, Fort Worth, Texas. This rare set documents the early days of China Trade silver, preserving both the original model by Standish Barry and a pair of spoons copied in China. Barry was born in Baltimore on November 4, 1763, the son of Dublin emigrant Lavallin Barry. He was apprenticed to David Evans, and began advertising as early as 1784. He served under George Washington in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, and later as a lieutenant of the Sans Culottes (also called the Baltimore Independent Blues) and as major in the 5th Volunteer Infantry in the War of 1812. He worked as a prolific silversmith for nearly twenty-five years, producing fine quality hollowware and flatware, and also minting the rare 1790 Baltimore threepence coin. He left the trade around 1810 to become a grocer and sugar refiner, later serving as sheriff of Baltimore County from 1824 to 1827, after which he retired to Newport, New York. He died there on November 6, 1844. It is not known for whom he produced the spoon here, but there was certainly a prosperous merchant class in Baltimore, any member of which might have had sufficient ties with the China Trade to commission copies: a common practice, given the significantly cheaper labor costs in the Orient. There was a well-known Chinese manufacturer - Wing Fat - who used the "WF" mark, but his Canton and Hong Kong workshops were active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, suggesting that these spoons are the product of an earlier and as yet unidentified maker.
