WILLIAM BARRY (1818 - 1879) Union brigadier general who served as Chief of Artillery for McDowell and was with Sherman on the March to the Sea. Superb content war-date A.L.S. on Artillery Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi letterhead, 1p., 4to., Goldsboro, March 24, 1865. Barry pens a reply to Philadelphian C.L. Pascal only three days after the Battle of Bentonville ended with a decisive and final victory of Sherman's forces over Johnston's. In part: "...General Sherman has just completed another of his brilliant campaigns, and with his army has struck a most damaging blow to the rebellion. We are now in a favorable position to follow up this success. Responding heartily to your hopes and wishes touching the termination of this war and thanking you kindly for expression of personal goodwill..." Boldly signed, "William F. Barry, Brevet Major General, Chief of Artillery". The letter contains an inlaid carte-de-visite [trimmed], and is archivally mounted to a brown stock backing. Vertical tear at left side, signature is affected by slight running of ink.
