AMADÉ BARTH (Zurich, Switzerland, 1899 – Romanäs, Sweden, 1926). "Still life". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. In good condition. Measurements: 47 x 57 cm; 65 x 74 cm (frame). The one we present here is a still life perfectly assigned to the European avant-garde that prevailed at the beginning of the 20th century in Paris. It refers to post-impressionism in its lighting conception and vibrant colors, although the workmanship is clearly personal, playing with planes and textures. Amadé Barth trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, his hometown. He traveled to Paris in 1920, where he met his future wife, the Swedish artist Signe Pettersson (1895-1982), who was immortalized by Edvard Munch in one of his paintings. In 1924, Barth contracted tuberculosis and his doctor advised him to seek treatment at the Ticino sanatorium, in southern Switzerland, where he carried out a profuse production of still lifes like the one in question. In 1928 the Granoff Gallery in Paris dedicated a commemorative exhibition to him that attracted the general public and was exquisitely reviewed. Among the buyers was the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, which acquired a Ticino landscape painting. The Swedish painter Otto G. Carlsund (1897-1948) wrote in his biography about the exhibition: “. It was a work of contemporary art in a timeless setting, a human, atheoretical and somehow definitive art. Then I did a careful study and found here all the abstract and concrete elements that a work of art must consist of to be universal. Critics in Paris were no less enthusiastic. From the newspaper clippings before me at the time of writing this article, there is unanimous praise for the honor of the dead artist.”
