        Bildnis einer jungen Frau mit Flechtfrisur. Feder in Schwarz über Bleistift auf Papier, aufgezogen. 8,2 x 7,4 cm. Unten rechts monogrammiert und datiert "CB 1821" sowie oben rechts in Bleistift betitelt "Margare(te) / Hoffm(ann) / von Op(penheim?)". Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Kupferstecher bei Johann Gotthard Müller in Stuttgart begab sich Barth über München nach Rom, wo er im Jahr 1817 eintraf. Dort schloss er sich dem Kreis der Nazarener um Friedrich Overbeck, Peter von Cornelius und Samuel Amsler an. Vier Jahre verbrachte Carl Barth in Rom, die zu den fruchtbarsten seines Lebens gehörten. Insbesondere das Portrait faszinierte den Künstler. Zahlreiche Bildnisse der Künstlerfreunde von seiner Hand haben sich erhalten, die heute zu den Inkunabeln der Portraitkunst der deutschen Romantik zählen, wie etwa das nach einer Zeichnung Barths von Samuel Amsler gestochene Künstlerbildnis Carl Philipp Fohrs aus dem Jahr 1818. Das vorliegende Portrait einer jungen Frau entstand offenbar kurz nach Barths Rückkehr aus Rom. Diese Art Bildnisse haben Walther Vontin zu der Bemerkung veranlaßt: "Am ergreifendsten sind die Bildnisse junger Frauen und Mädchen, die in diesen Jahren entstanden. Sie sind am rätselhaftesten. Hier bieten die Züge keine festausgeprägten Merkmale wie bei den Männerköpfen, sie scheinen sich in ihren weichen und zarten Formen gleichsam der Bestimmung zu entziehen, was aus ihnen spricht scheint unwägbar zu sein. Und gerade diesen zauberhaften Schmelz, diese unmittelbare Poesie des Wesens geben Barths Bilder mit einer rührenden Behutsamkeit wieder".
