      AMERICAN MINIATURE OIL SARA NORWOOD BARTLE

      Exceptionally Fine Detailed American 8 oz. Miniature Oil by Sara Norwood Bartle (1894-1931), who was born in Washington, D.C. and remained there, during most of her career as a painter of miniature portraits in oil on ivory and as an illustrator. She studied art in New York with Carroll Beckwith and at the Art Students Leagues in New York and Washington DC. She also painted and studied in Europe. She was a member of the Washington Water Color Club and exhibited there as well as the Art Institute of Chicago in 1916. In gilded silver frame and travel case. Inscribed with name William L. Carroll and date of birth and death 1838-1911. PROVENANCE: A member of the Carroll family by descent. SUBJECT: The portrait is of William L. Carroll, a direct descendant of Charles Carroll of Carrollton Maryland, an American statesman, a wealthy Maryland planter, an early advocate of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and one of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence. The sole Catholic signer of the Declaration, he is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Miniature 3 1/4"x 4 1/4". Case 6 4/3/4"x1".
