THE MAN WHO KILLED SAM BASS. HEROLD, GEORGE. 1860-1917. A collection of photos and documents relating to the Texas Ranger credited with firing the shot that killed outlaw Sam Bass, including: 1. Albumen print cabinet card photograph of Herold in policeman's uniform, c.1890, 5 1/2 x 4 inches laid down to 6 3/4 x 5 inch board, no photographer's imprint. 2. 6 documents relating to an 1893 charge of assault against Herold: a bond for his appearance, August 11, signed by John Selman; another bond with the same date; a deposition dated August 14 by Juan Gamboa stating that Herold did not strike the witness; a complaint by Herold accusing Juan Franco of impersonating an officer, August 14; a motion by Herold for a new trial, August 14; an order for Herold to be jailed, August 23. WITH: a CDV portrait of another early Texas Ranger, Vernon C. Wilson; and a gelatin silver print photo of Ranger J.B. Gillette and the much younger Frank Hamer discussing the Sam Bass case. Interesting collection of documents, including the grouping that indicates Herold had his own brush with the law after roughing up a witness (and possibly, a fellow officer).
