SAUL BASS (1921-1996) 2nd New York Film Festival / Philharmonic Hall / Lincoln Center. 1964. Lithograph poster. 115½x75½ cm, 45½x29¾ inches. Saul Bass became famous in the 1950s, thanks to his collaboration with Otto Preminger and Alfred Hitchcock, for each of whom he designed movie posters and title sequences. During his 40-year career, Bass worked for some of Hollywood's other most renowned filmmakers as well - Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. He revolutionized film poster design, thanks to his dropping the "big head" theory, prevalent in movie poster advertising throughout that decade, and the latter by redefining film's visual language. Whether using graphics or photography, his work is always highly symbolic and minimal, living up to his credo, "symbolize and summarize." MoMA 146.1977.

This may be one of Bass's rarest images, as the poster was designed for a one-night only screening of Eisenstein's 1938 Russian film Alexander Nevsky, scored by Prokofiev. As such, it would only have been printed in a limited number of copies.

The most recognizable iteration of this poster is a vertical format, devised of a yellow square and a red square, and the title of the film inside the silhouette of the body. This horizontal version with a white background is also seen with additional text around the image and in the bottom margin. This rare variant is absent of all text except for at the top margin; on the verso, it is stamped 'Design A' and bears handwritten notations that say 'Columbia Pictures / 2 Sheet / Teaser Campaign.'

The pun at the heart of the trademark is the parallel between 'anatomy' as the structure of the body, and 'anatomy' as the dissection of a body of evidence in a court of law. The various body parts evoke the various fragments of evidence presented in court. But when she can't produce any evidence of her daughter's existence, the mystery takes a new turn, leading to a suspenseful journey through belief and disbelief, existence and the void. Bass successfully communicates Ann's terror with a few simple devices: a paper cutout, letters fading away, and a slightly off-kilter composition. This fictional popular motor racing film is the story of the 1966 Formula One season through the eyes of four Formula One drivers. The film includes real-life motor racing footage and cameos by several Formula One World Champions, including Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil and Graham Hill and Jack Brabham. The film was directed by John Frankenheimer, and stars James Garner, Eva Marie Saint and Yves Montand. This is an exceptionally rare Saul Bass poster. It was designed and printed for Saul Bass's own use in his portfolio. Bass gave a number of these posters to friends and colleagues, and the family still have the majority of the ones that were printed.

This film was directed by Otto Preminger, and stars James Stewart. It was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to address sex and rape in graphic terms. It includes one of Saul Bass's most celebrated title sequences, an innovative musical score by Duke Ellington (who plays a character called Pie-Eye in the film), and is one of the finest pure trial films ever made. There were two British posters designed for this film, this one by the legendary Saul Bass, and the other a completely different style. The other poster was the one used to promote the film in the UK. This very rare poster was probably only produced for the London premiere. Exceptionally rare, with only a couple of examples to have surfaced to-date.

This was the last film poster that the legendary designer Saul Bass created. Unfortunately it was not chosen to be used in the advertising campaign, and therefore only a small number of these posters were printed. Steven Spielberg brilliantly handled the sensitive and difficult subject of the holocaust in his film Schindler's List, which was based on the famous novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally. The film stars Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Amon Göth, and Sir Ben Kingsley, and won seven Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

When it comes to graphic artists, the name Saul Bass is as big as they come. In the 1950s, however, when Bass was already well into his career, his name did not yet hold the sway it does today; unable to comprehend how one could fail to feature the main stars, Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak, on the poster, the studio insisted that he incorporate them into the design for the one sheet, which would be mainly used to advertise the film. On this larger billboard poster Bass was allowed to keep his original version. At the premiere of the film a 9 foot installation of the stylised jagged arm that Bass created was on display. This film was directed by Otto Preminger and stars Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak. The film was extremely controversial at the time of its release, as it dealt with drug addiction in a very real way. Fewer than ten of these posters are known to have survived.

Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners; paper reinforcement on verso of lower left corner. Paper. Saul Bass became famous in the 1950s, thanks to his collaboration with Otto Preminger and Alfred Hitchcock, for each of whom he designed movie posters and title sequences. He revolutionized both fields, the former thanks to his dropping the "big head" theory, prevalent in movie poster advertising throughout that decade, and the latter by redefining film's visual language. Whether using graphics or photography, his work is always highly symbolic and minimal, living up to his credo, "symbolize and summarize." This poster "encapsulates the sensation of vertigo by having a couple sucked into a vortex. The slightly off-kilter, irregular capitals further hint at the vertiginous" (Saul Bass p. 178). Spartacus (Universal International, 1960). Title Sequence Photo (13.5" X 30"). This is the # 5A frame from the opening title sequence to Spartacus designed by Saul Bass. It was used twice in the sequence; once horizontally and again vertically. It begins to be seen in a dissolve midway through "CHARLES LAUGHTON as GRACCHUS" until it fades out and is then used for the following title as well, "NINA FOCH, JOHN IRELAND, HERBERT LOM, JOHN DALL, CHARLES McGRAW." The board on which the image is mounted has some slight wear to the edges and rounding to the corners. There is still some black masking tape on the image area that was placed there by the camera department along with some "Start" and "Stop" camera directions for use by the animation stand operator. The back has the following stamp; Saul Bass & Assoc., 7758 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 46, Cal." Fine/Very Fine on Illustration Board.

It is an original work of art from the classic film title designer and was used directly in the film. This photo of a knife point goes with the #7 frame to complete the image of a hand holding a knife. The piece has a few surface abrasions, and there is a bit of black masking tape along the edges as placed by the camera department. Human Rights Week by Saul Bass (UNESCO, 1965). Poster (18" X 24"). American graphic designer Saul Bass is known for his work on outstanding film posters, such as The Shining, The Man with the Golden Arm, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, and many more. His unmistakable handiwork graces this poignant poster. In 1964, Bass was commissioned by the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO to create artwork promoting Human Rights Week, an annual celebration and awareness raiser of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The poster makes a powerful statement, as a burst of flames is seen blazing from some of the most admired articles of the declaration. The Man with the Golden Arm (United Artists, 1955). Three Sheet (41" X 78.5"). Heritage is pleased to present the rare three sheet format from this superb picture. The central image is the design of Saul Bass, creator of memorable logos for many fine films. Bass cleverly chose the black paper cut-out of a twisted heroin addict's arm, noting that the arm is the single most powerful image of real addiction. That he stamped both the opening credits and most of the poster artwork with this central image, and not that of Frank Sinatra's famous face, was a stroke of genius. Only light stains in the bottom border, fold wear, crossfold separations, and light wrinkling can be noted. An excellent opportunity to own a Saul Bass masterpiece! Folded, Very Fine.

The Man with the Golden Arm (United Artists, 1955). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Saul Bass's brilliant design set a new standard for movie posters during the 1950s. He was the first person to realize that the title sequences in films could be an art form unto themselves and could also contribute to the story. After designing the title sequences, his work was sometimes used to design the poster as well. In this case, Bass's design depicts the stylistic and broken arm of a heroin junkie. This was a taboo topic during the 1950s and caused quite a sensation when the film was released. Without a doubt, this was a groundbreaking design in the world of posters and is highly prized by collectors. There is a torn pinhole in the top and bottom border with paper tape on the verso, a small chip in the top right corner, and overall light wrinkling. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
