        Oct. 27, 2019

        Grand Prix. ca. 1985.

        Est: $700 - $900

ARTIST: SAUL BASS (1921-1996) SIZE: 25 x 39 in./63.4 x 99 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: "Grand Prix is a 1966 film about Formula One motor racing and the lives and loves of the drivers. Bass' stunning black and white symbol captures the tremendous thrust and power of the race cars that are so central to the dramas that unfold within the film, along with the visceral thrill of the races themselves. It encapsulates the name of the film within the pattern of the engine thrusts, adding greater visual and intellectual interest as the design reveals itself to the viewer. Into the negative space created by the racing cars moving upwards and to the left, seemingly about to exit the page, Bass inserts only six words in clear type, announcing that this is a John Frankenheimer film and that it is filmed in Cinerama. Aside from designing the poster, Bass worked as a visual consultant on this film, designing and directing all but one of the race sequences" (Film/Art Gallery website). Bonjour Tristesse. ca. 1985.

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: SAUL BASS (1921-1996) SIZE: 24 3/4 x 32 1/2 in./63 x 82.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: "Directed by Otto Preminger, 'Bonjour Tristesse,' which translates as 'Hello Sadness,' is a 1958 film adapted from Françoise Sagan's popular novel of the same name. The story centers around a pampered, motherless young woman vacationing with her father on the French Riviera. The film traces the girl's raw emotions of love, jealousy, and loss, as she leaves childhood for adolescence, falling in love at the same time as her father also embarks on a new romance. Bass' reductive but highly evocative symbol, a haiku-like eye and a tear, is created from a few simple brush strokes. [These features], together with a paint that fails to fully adhere, hint at the poignancy and delicacy of the emotions" (Film/Art Gallery website). (Contemporary; Film; American)

Anatomy of a Murder. ca. 1985.

        Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: SAUL BASS (1921-1996) SIZE: 25 1/4 x 35 3/8 in./64.2 x 89.8 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: "Bass' trademark for this 1959 film, which centers on a murder trial, is a stylized image of a human body made up of separate parts, each looking as if it was cut out of paper. The pun at the heart of the trademark is the parallel between 'anatomy' as the structure of the body, and 'anatomy' as the dissection of a body of evidence in a court of law. The various body parts evoke the various fragments of evidence presented in court. Each is irregular around the edges and, although they are positioned adjacent to one another, they do not quite align, just as the evidence about the murder and the motives involved fail to add up" (Film/Art Gallery website). ARTIST: SAUL BASS (1921-1996) SIZE: 25 x 35 1/2 in./63.6 x 90.2 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Bass designed this iconic image for the original release of "The Man with the Golden Arm"—but when the film was rereleased in 1960, black and white photographs of the stars were added to the graphic scene. Here, the collage exists in its purest state, undiluted by the stars of the silver screen, yet saturated in the torment of our protagonist's inner struggles. (Modern; Film; American)

        Oct. 27, 2019

Bunny Lake is Missing. ca. 1985.

        Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: SAUL BASS (1921-1996) SIZE: 25 x 39 in./63.5 x 99 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Bass' stark design evokes the surreal "Twilight Zone" nature of this 1965 psychological thriller in which Ann Lake discovers her daughter, Bunny, is missing. But when she can't produce any evidence of her daughter's existence, the mystery takes a new turn, leading to a suspenseful journey through belief and disbelief, existence and the void. Bass successfully communicates Ann's terror with a few simple devices: a paper cutout, letters fading away, and a slightly off-kilter composition. Though this design was not used for the original release, it is perhaps a better example of the designer's ability to communicate fiercely with minimalist tactics. (Contemporary; Film; American)

'GRAND PRIX' (1966) POSTER | US, special silkscreen, Saul Bass  (1920-1996)

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

This fictional popular motor racing film is the story of the 1966 Formula One season through the eyes of four Formula One drivers.  The film includes real-life motor racing footage and cameos by several Formula One World Champions, including Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil and Graham Hill and Jack Brabham.  The film was directed by John Frankenheimer, and stars James Garner, Eva Marie Saint and Yves Montand. This is an exceptionally rare Saul Bass poster.  It was designed and printed for Saul Bass's own use in his portfolio.  Bass gave a number of these posters to friends and colleagues, and the family still have the majority of the ones that were printed.

'ANATOMY OF A MURDER' (1959) POSTER | British, Style B, Saul Bass (1920-1996)

        Est: £2,400 - £3,500

This film was directed by Otto Preminger, and stars James Stewart.  It was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to address sex and rape in graphic terms. It includes one of Saul Bass's most celebrated title sequences, an innovative musical score by Duke Ellington (who plays a character called Pie-Eye in the film), and is one of the finest pure trial films ever made.  There were two British posters designed for this film, this one by the legendary Saul Bass, and the other a completely different style.  The other poster was the one used to promote the film in the UK. This very rare poster was probably only produced for the London premiere. Exceptionally rare, with only a couple of examples to have surfaced to-date.

'VERTIGO' (1958) POSTER | US, Saul Bass (1920-1996)

        Est: £5,000 - £8,000

This is the fourth and final time that James Stewart would work with Alfred Hitchcock, in one of his best loved thrillers.  The mood of the film was greatly enhanced by the score, which was written by Bernard Herrmann. Saul Bass's spiral poster design for this classic Alfred Hitchcock film has become synonymous with the film itself. Bass's intention to convey the feeling of vertigo through this design is clearly felt in his simple and stylish design.  The image has become one of the most defining images of 20th century cinema.

        Est: £1,500 - £2,500

This was the last film poster that the legendary designer Saul Bass created.  Unfortunately it was not chosen to be used in the advertising campaign, and therefore only a small number of these posters were printed. Steven Spielberg brilliantly handled the sensitive and difficult subject of the holocaust in his film Schindler's List, which was based on the famous novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally.  The film stars Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Amon Göth, and Sir Ben Kingsley, and won seven Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

This poster was designed by the legendary American graphic designer Saul Bass. In 1960 Bass was already very well established, having designed posters for Man with a Golden Arm, Vertigo and Anatomy of a Murder. Less than ten of these posters are known to have survived, and this is an extremely rare Saul Bass poster.

From the collection of Arnold Schwartzman.  The poster was given to Schwartzman when he joined Saul Bass & Associates as design director. This poster was printed by Saul Bass as a very limited edition for his own private use.  After leaving Saul Bass & Associates Schwartzman wrote and directed the Oscar winning documentary Genocide (1981). To-date no other example of this poster has surfaced.

When it comes to graphic artists, the name Saul Bass is as big as they come.  In the 1950s, however, when Bass was already well into his career, his name did not yet hold the sway it does today; unable to comprehend how one could fail to feature the main stars, Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak, on the poster, the studio insisted that he incorporate them into the design for the one sheet, which would be mainly used to advertise the film.  On this larger billboard poster Bass was allowed to keep his original version.  At the premiere of the film a 9 foot installation of the stylised jagged arm that Bass created was on display. This film was directed by Otto Preminger and stars Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak. The film was extremely controversial at the time of its release, as it dealt with drug addiction in a very real way.   Fewer than ten of these posters are known to have survived.

        Est: £1,500 - £2,400

Saul Bass's spiral poster design for this classic Alfred Hitchcock film has become synonymous with the film itself. Bass's intention to convey the feeling of vertigo through this design is clearly felt in his simple and stylish design.  The image has become one of the most defining images of 20th century cinema.   This is the fourth and final time that James Stewart would work with Alfred Hitchcock, in one of his best loved thrillers.  The mood of the film was greatly enhanced by the score, which was  written by Bernard Herrmann.

Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners; paper reinforcement on verso of lower left corner. Paper. Saul Bass became famous in the 1950s, thanks to his collaboration with Otto Preminger and Alfred Hitchcock, for each of whom he designed movie posters and title sequences. He revolutionized both fields, the former thanks to his dropping the "big head" theory, prevalent in movie poster advertising throughout that decade, and the latter by redefining film's visual language. Whether using graphics or photography, his work is always highly symbolic and minimal, living up to his credo, "symbolize and summarize." This poster "encapsulates the sensation of vertigo by having a couple sucked into a vortex. The slightly off-kilter, irregular capitals further hint at the vertiginous" (Saul Bass p. 178). The board on which the image is mounted has some slight wear to the edges and rounding to the corners. There is still some black masking tape on the image area that was placed there by the camera department along with some "Start" and "Stop" camera directions for use by the animation stand operator. His unmistakable handiwork graces this poignant poster. In 1964, Bass was commissioned by the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO to create artwork promoting Human Rights Week, an annual celebration and awareness raiser of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The poster makes a powerful statement, as a burst of flames is seen blazing from some of the most admired articles of the declaration. Offered for the first time by Heritage, the poster shows pinpoint crossfold separation, and very faint offset. The central image is the design of Saul Bass, creator of memorable logos for many fine films. Bass cleverly chose the black paper cut-out of a twisted heroin addict's arm, noting that the arm is the single most powerful image of real addiction. That he stamped both the opening credits and most of the poster artwork with this central image, and not that of Frank Sinatra's famous face, was a stroke of genius. Only light stains in the bottom border, fold wear, crossfold separations, and light wrinkling can be noted. An excellent opportunity to own a Saul Bass masterpiece! Folded, Very Fine.

The Man with the Golden Arm (United Artists, 1955). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Saul Bass's brilliant design set a new standard for movie posters during the 1950s. He was the first person to realize that the title sequences in films could be an art form unto themselves and could also contribute to the story. After designing the title sequences, his work was sometimes used to design the poster as well. In this case, Bass's design depicts the stylistic and broken arm of a heroin junkie. This was a taboo topic during the 1950s and caused quite a sensation when the film was released. Without a doubt, this was a groundbreaking design in the world of posters and is highly prized by collectors. There is a torn pinhole in the top and bottom border with paper tape on the verso, a small chip in the top right corner, and overall light wrinkling. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
