H : 8 cm     Diam : 16 cm A rare circular bowl on foot in carved tortoise shell. Signed «G.Bastard». Circa 1920. Although Georges Bastard Art Nouveau creations are outstanding he remains one of the major figures of Art Deco and of the Union des Artistes Moderns. His rich production of boxes, fans, paper knives, sweet boxes, bowls and jewellery is characterized by his use of such delicate materials as mother-of-pearl, ivory, or tortoiseshell as for our bowl. He most probably inherited this love of fine work and delicate materials from his grandfather who was a great specialist in working with precious wood, ivory and other materials used for making such objects as draughtboards or chessboards. Most of Georges Bastard pieces were unique and often attracted attention and were greeted with pleasure during the Salons de la Société des Artists Français.
