JAN PIETER VAN BAURSCHEIT THE OLD (Wormersdorf, 1669- Antwerp, 1728). "Child with bowl". Sculpture in white marble.

      Est: €12,000 - €13,000

JAN PIETER VAN BAURSCHEIT THE OLD (Wormersdorf, 1669- Antwerp, 1728). "Child with bowl". Sculpture in white marble. The sculpture comes from the stairs of the castle of 's Gravenwezel at the time when the owners were the Gillès de Pélichy family. The castle was sold to the antique dealer Axel Vervoort without this sculpture which was taken by the Gillès de Pélichy family. Measurements: 68 x 60 x 35 cm. The sculpture in white marble that concerns us represents a child of graceful and innocent forms. His plump face is framed by curly hair resolved in naturalistic language. His raised arm holds a bowl with which he would offer fruit or divine juice, which could be an allegory to the god Bacchus. The small one rests on a base of rockery and plants crossed by a lizard. At the end of the eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century, the representations of the God of wine and his entourage became widely popular due largely to the fact that the characteristics of the characters mentioned allowed to exacerbate the expressions, thus achieving sculptures with greater expressiveness and dynamism. Jan Peter van Baurscheit the Elder was apprenticed to Pieter Verbrugghen the Elder's nephew, Pieter Scheemaeckers and later joined the Guild of St. Luke as a master sculptor in 1694. He is known for his religious works in various materials for the churches of Antwerp. Works by him and his son - the architect Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Younger - are preserved in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels.
