Johann Friedrich Bause (1738 Halle (Saale) - 1814 Weimar) after Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur - 1813 Dresden): Portrait of Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener, Writer of the Enlightenment, c. 1800, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: c. 1800 Description: Titled in the centre below the depiction, signed below: on the left "Anton Graff pinx." and on the right "I. F. Bause sculps. Lips.". The portrait shows the German writer and publicist of the Enlightenment, Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener (1714-1771), who wrote satirical articles for various journals in Leipzig and was called the "German Swift". Person: Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener (1714 Wachau manor - 1771 Dresden) German writer and publicist of the Enlightenment. Already during his time in Leipzig, he wrote articles for various journals, mostly in satirical or essayistic form. He was often called the "German Swift" because of his writing style, probably because he later approximated the style of the English weeklies. Rabener's prose satire in the form of short novels, letters, poems and proverbs, in which he satirised human misconduct as well as the social ills of the bourgeoisie, was widely published in periodicals. He published his publications in the 1750s under the title Sammlung satirischer Schriften (Collection of Satirical Writings) as a collection that would ultimately comprise four volumes. This publication went through several editions within a few years and was also published in Danish, French, English and Swedish, among other languages.
