Bayes started his career as a self-taught portrait painter, before enrolling at Heatherley's Art School in 1863. The present work is an example of the artist's peaceful, contemplative scenes, typically featuring figures in historical or regional costumes.

Bayes exhibited in the Royal Academy (1858-1908), the British Institution (1859-1867), & the Society of British Artists & the New Watercolour Society.
