      Alfred Walter Bayes,  British 1832-1909-  Portrait of a girl, in profile, knitting;  oil on panel, signed with monogram 'AWB' (lower right), signed 'a.w.Bayes' and inscribed and dated 'To E.A.B. / Dec / 27' verso, bears label for the Rowley Gallery verso, 31 x 21 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Alfred Walter Bayes is not to be confused with his son, the Camden Town painter Walter John Bayes (1869-1956). Bayes started his career as a self-taught portrait painter, before enrolling at Heatherley's Art School in 1863. The present work is an example of the artist's peaceful, contemplative scenes, typically featuring figures in historical or regional costumes.
