Within original period frames. Both have frame size 39 x 48 cm. First image size 7 x 14 cm the other 8 x 14.5 cm. Provenance: Leonard Joels in the Lansell Collection (label verso). August 1934, Melbourne Town Hall.

Charles Louis BAZIN (1802-1859) « L’empereur Napoléon Ier et la fondation de la Maison de la Légion d’honneur 20 mars 1809 ». Huile sur toile (rentoilée). Cadre en bois doré marqué. Dim : 47 x 36 cm. Avec cadre : 63 x 54 cm. Historique : Notre tableau est une reprise du tableau allégorique commémorant le décret impérial du 20 mars 1809 organisant les maisons d’éducation d’Ecouen et de Saint Denis pour les orphelines de la Légion d’honneur. L’original a été exécuté par Pierre Joseph Bazin. L’inscription ancienne du cadre laisse penser que notre exemplaire est une reprise de son jeune frère Charles Louis peintre sculpteur graveur et lithographe français. Au centre l’Empereur à sa droite la Reine Hortense Mme Campan le Grand Aumônier le cardinal Fesch le Grand Chancelier de l’ordre Lacépède. A sa gauche l’urne contenant les cendres des légionnaires cravatée de la Légion d’honneur. La mention « La Patrie reconnaissante » ne subsiste pas sur le tableau définitif. Exposition : Nassau County Museum of art Napoléon & Eugénie Opulence et Splendor of French’s Second Empire 7 juin – 7 septembre 2009.
