Biography: Artist Gifford Beal was known for work that focused in a modernist style on a variety of subjects including marine, circus scenes, and landscapes. He was born in New York, graduated from Princeton in 1900, and studied at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase, George Bridgman and Frank Vincent DuMond. From 1914 to 1929, he was President of the Art Students League. In addition to oil painting, he did considerable mural painting. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Institute of Arts and Letters, the Architectural League of America, and the National Society of Mural Painters. Gifford Beal traveled to the Caribbean as a young artist and later, in 1953 near the end of his life. During both visits, he was attracted to the bright colors and lively culture, but the tropical environment did not agree with him and his stay was brief. Upon his return to the United States, Beal executed a handful of paintings based on his drawings and memories of his trip, including this painting and Waterfall, Haiti, 1954, which is in the Phillips Collection.
