      MARY BEALE (BRITISH 1633-1699) HALF LENGTH PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM FORSTER AGED 8 Signed, inscribed and dated 1683, feigned oval, oil on canvas 76cm x 63.5cm (30in x 25in) In her Mary Beale exhibition catalogue at the Geffrye Museum (1999, p.53) Tabitha Barber quotes from Charles Beale's account books which describes the stretcher as having ‘half lapped corner joints nailed together with 3 conical headed nails. The bars have rounded edges but no distinct bevel’. See the photograph of the reverse of our painting for a similar construction.

It is more probable this is a portrait of the Hon. Thomas Coventry (circa 1662-1710), later 2nd Earl of Coventry.
