Peter Hill Beard Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer

Peter Hill Beard is an American artist, photographer, diarist and writer who lives and works in New York City and Kenya. His photographs of Africa, African animals and the journals that often integrate his photographs have been widely shown and published since the 1960s.

Peter Beard was born in 1938 as a New York aristocrat, heir to a railroad fortune on his mother’s side of the family and a tobacco inheritance on his father’s.[1] He was raised in New York City, Alabama, and Islip, Long Island, Beard began keeping diaries as a young boy and making photographs, as an extension of the diaries, at the age of 12.[2] A graduate of Pomfret School, he entered Yale University in 1957, with the intention of pursuing pre-med studies, only to switch his major to art history. His mentors at Yale included Josef Albers, Richard Lindner and Vincent Scully.

Inspired by earlier trips to Africa in both 1955 and 1960, Beard traveled to Kenya upon graduation. Working at Tsavo National Park, he photographed and documented the demise of 35,000 elephants and other wildlife, later to become the subject of his first book, “The End of the Game.”[3] During this time, Beard acquired Hog Ranch, a property near the Ngong Hills adjacent to the coffee farm owned by Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), which would become his lifelong home-base in East Africa.[4]

Art: Peter Beard’s photographs of Africa, African animals and journals that often integrate his photographs have been widely shown and published since the 1970s. Each of his works is unique, a combination of his photography with elements derived from his daily diary-keeping, a practice he continues to this day. These volumes contain newspaper clippings, dried leaves, insects, old sepia-toned photos, transcribed telephone messages, marginalia in India ink, photographs of women, quotes, found objects, and the like; these become incorporated, with original drawings and collage by Beard. Certain of his works incorporate animal blood, sometimes Beard’s own blood (in sparing quantities), a painting medium the artist favors.[5]

Beard’s first exhibition was at the Blum Helman Gallery, New York, in 1975. Landmark museum exhibitions have been held at the International Center of Photography, New York, in 1977, and the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris, in 1997. Gallery exhibitions followed in Berlin, London, Toronto, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo and Vienna. Beard’s work is included in private collections throughout the world.[6]

In 2017, Beard was sued by actor David Spade who purchased one of his works. Spade tried to resell a Peter Beard photograph that he had purchased from dealer Peter Tunney but the unsigned work could not be authenticated.[7]

BEARD, PETER 1938 New York - 2020 Montauk Title: Camera Work Portfolio, 1960-1987. Subtitle: 10-part. Date: Later prints from 1998. Technique: Gelatin silver print. Depiction Size: 49 x 33,5cm. Sheet Size: 50 x 40,5cm. Notation: Signed, dated, titled and many inscribed with detailed notes in ink on recto or in the margin. Additionally verso with copyright stamp. Number: 5/10. Frame: Each framed. Provenance: - Camera Work Gallery, Berlin - Private collection North-Rhine-Westphalia - Peter Beard led an artist's life between extremes: glamour and danger - The fight for species conservation became the photographer's personal concern - Beard sensitively described and labelled his prints as more than documentations of the outside world: as testimonies to his turbulent inner life A life between endangered species and supermodels The American photographer Peter Beard made his first trip to Africa at the age of 17, accompanied by the great-grandson of Charles Darwin. After studying art history under Josef Albers at Yale University and working for a time as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine, Beard turned to the African continent and thus to his life's work after his fateful encounter with Tania Blixen in 1961. He established his permanent residence in Kenya with the construction of his farm, Hog Ranch, near the capital, Nairobi, and in the neighbourhood of Blixen's coffee plantation. Since then, he has dedicated his work to the unsparing documentation of the destruction of the natural animal world and to species protection. Beard, who led an eccentric lifestyle, had already become known for his haunting portraits of prominent representatives of the art world and New York society, to which he himself belonged. As a colourful character who was friends with protagonists such as Truman Capote, Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol, he never completely turned his back to superficial society. Beard was considered a restless vagabond, just as untamable as the wild creatures he photographed. Artist and bon vivant, he led a double life that revolved around women and predators. In Kenya, Beard experienced a time when independence from Great Britain was taking place, the black market in ivory and rhinoceros horn was increasing uncontrollably, and droughts were depleting resources. His unsparing exposure of these injustices is documented in his photographs of the dying of elephants and other wild animals in Kenya's Tsavo National Park, which were published in 1965 in the shocking book ‘The End of the Game’. The documentary filmmaker and activist with a pronounced penchant for adventure did not shy away from risk or danger in order to capture the tortured nature and its creatures up close. Impressions full of beauty and pain The diaries that Peter Beard has kept throughout his life have a special place in his work. They are both an artistic project and a private passion. The pages are exuberant and chaotic, filled with things and finds that reflect daily life or a particular mood. In addition to the photographs, there are spontaneous pen drawings, handwritten lines and splashes of colour, as well as small bones, product labels, newspaper headlines, telephone numbers and even traces of blood. Just as Beard's documentary photographs and notes provide insights into the wounded soul of Africa, so the spontaneous collages with notes and sketches reveal the inner world of the artist. The Camera Work portfolio contains a collection of such edited photographic prints, some of them from ‘The End of the Game’, supplemented with texts. This is where the contrast that is inherent in Beard's images is particularly impressive, and at the same time reveals the conflict of their creator between beauty and pain. On the one hand, his highly aesthetic photographs can be seen as an ecstatic celebration of the African soul, even as something glamorous. On the other hand, they must be understood as an indictment, even a desperate outcry in the face of the downfall of a continent fighting a hopeless battle against the exploitation of industrialisation. Ultimately, the gripping power of Beard's images does not stem from a sober documentary function, but from their overwhelming expressiveness as personal documents. They testify to the fact that Beard has devoted himself body and soul to the fight for the preservation of the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals. His photographs of Africa, African animals and the journals that often integrated his photographs have been widely shown and published since the 1960s. Beard began writing journals as a child and taking photographs, as an extension of the journals, at the age of 12. A graduate of the Pomfret School, he entered Yale University in 1957, intending to pursue pre-med studies, but changed his major to art history. At Yale, he participated in the Scroll and Key secret society. His mentors at Yale included Josef Albers, Richard Lindner, and Vincent Scully. Beard graduated with a B.A. in 1961.Inspired by earlier trips to Africa in 1955 and 1960, Beard traveled to Kenya after graduating. Working in Tsavo National Park, he photographed and documented the disappearance of 35,000 elephants and other wildlife, which would later become the subject of his first book, The End of the Game. During this time, Beard acquired Hog Ranch, a property near the Ngong Hills adjacent to the coffee estate owned by Karen Blixen, which would become his lifelong base of operations in East Africa.Beard's first exhibition was at the Blum Helman Gallery, New York City, in 1975 and throughout his career he has had landmark museum exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, New York City, in 1977, and at the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris, in 1997. PETER BEARD (New York, 1938-2020). Untitled, 1997. Ink on invitation from the artist's exhibition "Carnets Africans" (New York, 1997). Framed with museum glass. On the reverse side detail of his pages from his Diary. Signed "Salaams from Peter Beard Box 47616 Nairobi". Measurements: 14 x 35,5 cm; 24 x 44, 5 cm (frame). In this invitation from the artist's retrospective held in New York in 1997, Peter Beard's own intervention can be appreciated in the drawing of the palm tree and the elephant on which he has stamped his fingerprint, simulating the animal's footprint. In addition, under its trunk you can see a hedgehog with synthetic forms, characteristic of the author's iconography. Peter Beard was an American artist, photographer, chronicler and writer who lived and worked in New York City, Montauk and Kenya. Gallery exhibitions followed in Berlin, London, Toronto, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo and Vienna. Beard's work is included in private collections worldwide. Framed with museum glass.

Peter Beard (1938-2020), American A BEND IN THE RIVER AFTER THE DIE-OFF, 1976 gelatin silver print with ink and collage elements signed, titled, dated, and annotated in ink; stamped and labeled verso 19 x 13 in — 48.3 x 33 cm Provenance: Gift from the Artist to AMREF Health Africa - Canada, 1999 Private Collection, Toronto, ON Note: Peter Beard grew up in an environment that venerated art and nature. His family, heirs to the Great Northern Railway Company, settled in Montauk, New York in the late 19th century and amassed a large collection of realist paintings. The desire to depict the reality of nature in all its glory and suffering inspired Beard in his own career in photography, where the artist would carefully document diminishing wildlife populations throughout the African continent. Harbouring an interest in naturalism in his youth, Beard began collecting and scrapbooking elements of nature he found indelible – leaves, animal skins, bone, and blood. The artist’s draw to nature led Beard to travel across Africa at age 17, Voigtlander camera in hand, with the great-grandson of Charles Darwin, Quentin Keynes. (1) The awe-inspiring trip would be the first of many for the photographer as he would take up residence in Kenya and begin to note the brutal, rapid decline of the wildlife population. Beard took particular interest in the Tsavo River region of Kenya, where he befriended the warden of Tsavo River East National Park, Bill Woodley, in 1961. Encountering the likes of hunters, poachers, and nature conservators, Beard quickly noted the unsustainable environment inhabited by the elephants and photographed his findings in his 1965 book “The End of the Game – Last Word From Paradise.” The book would bring the photographer international acclaim from fellow authors and artists including Kurt Vonnegut, The Rungstedlund Foundation, Salvador Dalí, and Francis Bacon. “A Bend in the River After the Die Off,” 1976 by Peter Beard is one of the artist’s most iconic and well-known images – depicting the few surviving elephants of the Tsavo River National Park drought in the 1960s and ‘70s. In this particular work on offer, Beard draws on his childhood journaling by personalizing the print via annotations with collage elements and recollections from his time spent in the Tsavo River region. When preparing for the 2013 dedicated auction of his photographs at Christie’s New York, Beard reflected on his experience capturing “A Bend in the River After the Die Off,” 1976 stating: “Kurt Vonnegut told me once that when he witnessed 30,000 people die at Dresden, he felt as though he owned the whole horror, that the weight was on his shoulders. That was the way I felt about Tsavo.”(2) As the devastation continued in the Tsavo River region, Beard would go on to publish the second edition of “The End of the Game” which included the unaltered version of this photograph.
