            Aubrey Beardsley, The Yellow Book

            Est: $2,000 - $2,600

Aubrey Beardsley The Yellow Book 1894 25.25 h x 8.75 w in (64 x 22 cm) Originally used to advertise a line of children's books, here Beardsley's design announces the January 1895 issue of The Yellow Book. Brian Reade notes: "Such winged chairs were known as grandfather's chairs, and Beardsley may have intended to represent a grandmother sitting in an appropriate chair and reading to her grandchildren from one of the books... The gown with its leg-of-mutton sleeves is of the Nineties, but the feather is in the mode of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Instead of age and maturity therefore Beardsley has formulated a disturbing sensuality in the features of the woman. This was the kind of negligent irony which repelled so many of his own generation" (Beardsley, p. 343). During his short life, Beardsley's principal works were black-and-white illustrations, primarily for books and magazines. Additionally, he created several posters of great artistic merit. Geo. H. Walker, Boston Literature: DFP-I, 9 (var); Beardsley, 335 (var); PAI-XCII, 132 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

This publication was short-lived, lasting only one year, and Beardsley did the lion’s share of the graphics for it. All eight numbers were later offered in three bound volumes, and this is the “posterette” (Beardsley’s word) for it, prepared from the black and white cover design for the last issue. [Berlin, Hyperion 1919]. Mit neun [!] Tafeln. 33 : 22,5 cm. 94, [4] Seiten, 9 Tafeln. – Unterränder vereinzelt minimal stockfleckig. Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: AUBREY BEARDSLEY (1872-1898) SIZE: 9 x 25 1/2 in./22.8 x 64.8 cm PRINTER: Geo. H. Walker, Boston DESCRIPTION: Originally used to advertise a line of children’s books, here Beardsley’s design announces the January 1895 issue of The Yellow Book. Brian Reade notes: “Such winged chairs were known as grandfather’s chairs, and Beardsley may have intended to represent a grandmother sitting in an appropriate chair and reading to her grandchildren from one of the books... The gown with its leg-of-mutton sleeves is of the Nineties, but the feather is in the mode of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Instead of age and maturity therefore Beardsley has formulated a disturbing sensuality in the features of the woman. This was the kind of negligent irony which repelled so many of his own generation” (Beardsley, p. 343). During his short life, Beardsley’s principal works were black-and-white illustrations, primarily for books and magazines. Additionally, he created several posters of great artistic merit. (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

            Est: $3,000 - $4,000

AUBREY BEARDSLEY (1872-1898) THE PSEUDONYM AND AUTONYM LIBRARIES. 1894. 30x19 1/2 inches, 76 1/4x49 1/2 cm. T. Fisher Unwin, London. Condition A-: minor creases along vertical and horizontal folds; slight foxing in text and image; reds slightly attenuated. Paper. Matted and framed. Aubrey Beardsley, beloved and reviled in Britain as the most visible rebel against staid Victorian mores, began work as art editor for the Yellow Book in 1894. His decorative Art Nouveau style, considered grotesque and vulgar by many, was widely imitated in America and added life, spice, excitement and novelty to American poster sidings. Writing in The Poster in November 1900, Scotson-Clark pointed out that, "Until the introduction of the Beardsley work, all posters seen were . . . stippled until all life had been taken out of them." For this, like his posters for the Yellow Book, Beardsley designed the images and the text frame was left blank to be filled in by the publisher of the books being advertised. As a result this poster exists with several different text variations. While the bookstore at the top of the image is treated in a rather classic manner, the charismatic, elongated woman seen in profile is absolutely representative of his minimal graphic treatment and use of flat colors.
