SIR CECIL WALTER HARDY BEATON C.B.E. (BRITISH 1904-1980) COSTUME STUDIES Watercolour, ink and wash on buff paper 37cm x 30cm (14.6in x 11.75in) From the Estate of Dorothy Bohm Dorothy Bohm was a British photographer based in London, known for her portraiture, street photography, early adoption of colour, and photography of London and Paris. She is considered one of the doyennes of British photography.Dorothy Bohm was born in 1924 in Koenigsberg, East Prussia and moved to England in 1939. By the age of 21, she was running her own very successful portrait studio in central Manchester, known as Studio Alexander. In the mid-1950s, she lived for a while both in Paris and New York before settling definitively in northwest London. Her first solo exhibition, People at Peace, took place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1969, and 1970 saw the publication of her first book, A World Observed. Numerous more books and exhibitions would follow. In 1971 she was closely involved in the founding of The Photographers’ Gallery, and served as its Associate Director for the next fifteen years. CECIL BEATON (1904-1980) Eliza Doolittle.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

CECIL BEATON (1904-1980) Eliza Doolittle. Sketch costume design for the motion picture, My Fair Lady, 1964. Gouache and graphite on paper. 456x288 mm; 18x11¼ inches (image). 23¾x16⅝ inches (frame). Signed in lower right image. Inscribed on verso of frame: "To Elizabeth (Lizzie), with all good wishes & thanks, Cecil Beaton 1968." Cecil Beaton's design for the dress and hat worn by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic Ascot scene is a masterful blend of historical elegance and 1960s haute couture. Inspired by the Black Ascot of 1910-a horse race at Ascot Racecourse where attendees wore black to mourn King Edward VII, Beaton's creation perfectly mirrors Eliza's transformation. The scene, featuring costumes for 400 extras, is a dazzling display of campy, flamboyant, and theatrical brilliance.
