August Becker was a German painter, dedicated mainly to landscape painting. Landscape painter, he was born in Darmstadt. He studied in that city with Schilbach as a teacher, and later in Düsseldorf. In 1844 he traveled in Norway, Switzerland, the Tyrol and the Scottish Highlands.1 At Balmoral he taught landscape painting to British royalty. His mountain landscape paintings were especially notable; they included Evening in the Bernese Oberland (1860 and 1867); Norwegian Table (1861); and The Kaiser's Mountains in the Tyrol (1864). He maintained ties with the Romanian royal family, as well as with the military man Emil zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
