Beckly pinx. 1753.’ to the right edge Dimensions: 90 x 71 cm In ebonized wooden frame: 98 x 79 cm A typical virtuously painted half-length portraitf from the Baroque Condition: The painting is in good condition, according to age. The paint surface has darkened somewhat and shows pressure marks from the stretcher, small stains and craquelure. The inspection under UV light reveals small strokes of retouching to the figure and the background and a major touch-up to the upper head of the sitter. The reverse bears a patch. The frame shows traces of usage and traces of an inactive woodworm infestation. The dimensions are 90 x 71 cm, and the frame measures 98 x 79 cm. E. Beckly (1711-1774) E. Beckly has been put into relation with other artist names, such as August Wilhelm Beckly; Ludwig Wilhlem Beckly; E. J. A. Beckly. He worked as a portrait painter in Berlin and in Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, as well the Harz. He created especially half-length portraits and a few chest and knee portraits, as well as portraits of children. Some of E. Belsky’s paintings have been copied so that a workshop operation can be assumed. Works of E. Belsky can be found at the Landesmuseum Braunschweig and the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum.
