Francesco Beda Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

Born in 1840, Italian artist Francesco Beda was known for placing items in his painted scenes that were chronologically incorrect. This was known as an anachronistic form of painting, appealing to some collectors. After studying under Austrian fresco painter Karl Von Blaas, Beda began doing genre, historical, and portrait painting. Francisco Beda's paintings include portraits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Bishop Strossmayer of Zagreb; Beda's skillful artwork was very popular with the Austrian Court and other wealthy buyers.

Catering to collectors was the main goal for the creation of Francesco Beda paintings. He painted what would sell, and became wealthy through his many commissioned works. Later in his career, he began to paint scenes of the Middle East, and much of Francesco Beda’s art for sale at that time was inspired by Ernest Meissonier. After Francesco Beda,  Austro-Hungarian 1840-1900-  Admiring the portrait;  oil on canvas, signed 'A. Monti' (lower right), 60 x 46 cm.  Provenance:  Property from a European Private Collection.  Note:  The present work is a copy, with minor variations, after Beda's original, which was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 15 March 1989 (lot 28) for £16,500. The composition is typical of Beda's playful genre scenes depicting figures in historical costume, and clearly heavily influenced by Beda's training under Karl von Blaas (1815-1894).

Francesco Beda (Italian 1840-1900) The Suitor signed lower left 'F Beda' oil on canvas 66 x 92.5 cm Footnote: Provenance: The Weston Gallery, Weston Longville, Norwich Francesco Beda was born in Trieste in 1840, then a prosperous Habsburg port of the Austrian Empire (later the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867). Beda travelled to nearby Venice to enrol at the Accademia di Venezia, where he studied under Karl von Blaas (1815-1894), previously a Professor at the Academy of Vienna. Specialising in portraits and elegant historical genre scenes, Beda gained great success throughout the Empire and came to the attention of the Habsburg imperial family. He travelled extensively through Croatia, Austria, Hungary, England and North Africa, securing numerous commissions from wealthy patrons, including the Empress Elizabeth. His Rococo interiors filled with elegantly dressed figures catered to the taste of the new bourgeoisie and became highly fashionable. Valued for their exquisite detail, they appealed to the emerging fascination and curiosity for the refined tastes and decadent lifestyles of the old aristocracy of the previous century. Drawing upon the art of Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), Beda is regarded as one of Meissonier’s most talented followers, creating his own entertaining and light-hearted style.

MALER IM ATELIER MIT AKTMODELL Öl auf Leinwand. 61 x 86,5 cm. Jahrhundert entsprach. Das Gemälde von hoher feinmalerischer Qualität. (861252) Francesco Beda, 1840 - 1900 Oil on canvas. 61 x 86.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right.
