      Arthur P. Bedou (1882-1966) Photograph of Louis Armstrong. Arthur P. Bedou was an African-American photographer based in New Orleans. Bedou was, for a time, the personal photographer of Booker T. Washington, and documented the last decade of Washington's life. He also documented campus life at Xavier University of Louisiana, the Tuskegee Institute, and the city life of New Orleans, especially the city's black residents. Measures 7.625 x 9.75 inches. VG/VG+ condition. A.P. Bedou blind stamp lower right. This appears to be a photo of a photo, is vintage, not a Type I. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. We gladly will give shipping estimates prior to auction. Please make this request at least 24 hours prior to auction for our shipping department to respond. If your invoice is for multiple items, we will use our discretion on requiring the use of an outside shipper. We reserve the right to require an outside shipper on any item(s) in the auction even if not stated.

      Arthur P. Bedou (1882-1966, New Orleans), "Portrait of a Young Man in a Double Breasted Suit," early 20th c., presented in the original cardboard mat marked "A. P. Bedou- N. O., La," H.- 7 in., W.- 5 in. Note: Bedou was a self taught African-American photographer and the personal photographer of Booker T. Washington, and photographed notables such as Duke Ellington, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington Carver and Andrew Carnegie. He won several awards during his career, and left his fortune to educational institutions such as Xavier University.

      ARTHUR P. BEDOU (1882 - 1966) Booker T. Washington, Speaking in his Last Pilgrimage in Louisiana. Silver print, 1915. 191x241 mm; 7 1/2x9 1/2 inches, full margins. With the artist's stamp, "Copyright By A. P. Bedou, N.O., LA., 1915" in ink, upper right. Booker T. Washington, the founder of Tuskegee Institute in 1881, was a celebrated leader in the African-American education movement. His last pilgrimage to Louisiana took place in April, 1915, where he spoke at various black parishes in Louisiana about the importance of education. Despite his failing health, Washington spoke to the crowds with the same passion and spirit that made him a renowned orator. He died in November of that year.

Bedou, a New Orleans photographer, documented life in the city for over 50 years. He is known for photographs of Booker T. Washington's public and private life--including this view of Washington in front of his personal residence, as well as Louisiana jazz musicians and life on the Tuskegee University campus.
