''Boxing Gym'', circa 1939, signed lower left: Hugo Beetz, graphite and watercolor on paper under glass, sight size:18.5'' H x 19'' W, est:$3000/5000 Literature: 'Carl Hugo Beetz: Reflections of California Life'', Papillon Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, 2009, no. 22, pp. 13, exhibition catalogue. Note: The present work is a powerful example of American regional painter Carl Hugo Beetz's obsession with the world of sport. In this behind-the-scenes moment in a Los Angeles boxing gym, Beetz's reference to the boxing paintings of George Bellows (1882-1925) is evident in the use of lighting, composition and subject. The artist made subtle changes in composition between this watercolor and the finished mixed media study that follows this lot. *** Please click ''view more'', below right for more information. ***
