Hossein Behzad Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1894 - d. 1968

Hossein Behzad (1894 – 13 October 1968) was a prominent Iranian painter. His early work was in the styles of the old masters of Persian painting of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, hoping to save Persian miniature painting from oblivion.

Born in Shiraz, Iran in 1894 to Mirza Lotfollah Esfahani. His father was a pen-holder designer.

He married Azizeh Khanam in 1921, who gave birth to their only child, Parviz.

During the early 1930s, Behzad reorganized Tehran's Madrasa-I Sanayi-I Mustazrafa. In 1934 he left Tehran for Paris and stayed for thirteen months. During this time which time he studied various Eastern and Western painting styles at the Louvre, Guimet museum and Palace of Versailles. It was during this trip developed a completely new style of miniature painting, combining aspects of traditional Persian painting with contemporary painting from the West.

He became internationally known and won many awards including the 'first class medal of the ministry of culture' from Iran in 1949 and the 'first class medal of international painting' from Minneapolis, USA in 1958.[4] In 1968 Behzad was give an honorary professorship by the College of Ornamental Arts, Behzad's works have been displayed across the world. To celebrate the millennium of Avicenna, in 1953 he held an exhibition at the Iran Bastan Museum. This caused a sensation and was seen by many international visitors. The paintings on show, which took ten years to complete, included the like of Ferdowsi and the Maedan Arch. The exhibition became particularly important to scholars of oriental studies. In an article for the Vatan newspaper of Istanbul, Professor Soheil Anwar wrote, " Behzad, this great artist does not belong only to Iran. He now belongs to the world."

Shortly after, and to much critical acclaim, Behzad held an exhibition, which was sponsored by the French government, at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The exhibition was opened by the French minister for culture on 18 May 1955.

He first practiced a conservative form of Neo-Safavidism, and later developed a new idiom that merged revivalism and modernism. In 1956, fifty Behzad miniatures were put on display in the Library of Congress, Washington DC. As Behzad became a living master, he held exhibitions across the world including London, Prague, New York, Boston and Brussels, as well as in India and Japan.

Death and legacy: By 1968 Behzad had become ill and was sent twice to Europe by the Ministry of Culture. Despite this, Behzad died at 8:48pm on 13 October 1968 at the age of 74. He was buried at the cemetery near Imamzadeh Abdollah in Shahr-i Ray.

In honor of the artist, the Behzad Museum was founded in 1994, and is located in Tehran's Sa'dabad Complex and holds a large collection of his works.

TEN RARE AND UNSEEN PREPARATORY FIGURAL SKETCHES BY HOSSEIN BEHZAD FOR HIS PUPIL, TOWLIAT Modern Iran, dated 1344 and 1346 Shamsi (1965 and 1967 AD), signed by Hossein Behzad (Iranian, 1894 - 1968) and occasionally countersigned by his pupil Pencil, black and brown ink on paper, comprising a horizontal-format and nine vertical-format preparatory, tutorial sketches drawn by the Iranian modern painter Hossein Behzad to instruct his pupil Towliat, portraying different typical characters of his works including elderly wise men, coming-of-age youths, young maidens and mothers with children, some sketches with a parodical flare like the one of Mullah Nasruddin on his donkey, all set against a plain, void background, six dated to different months in 1344 Shamsi (1965 AD) and three to different months in 1346 Shamsi (1967 AD), all signed with the artist's post-1960s signature, addressed in the artist's pen to his student Towliat, some countersigned by the young apprentice, some bearing inventory numbers in the lower-right corner or at the back, the largest ca. 35cm x 25.5cm. Hossein Behzad (1894 – 13 October 1968) (حسین بهزاد) remains to this day one of the most widely renowned and praised Iranian painters of the 20th century. After having reorganized Tehran's School of Painting (Madraseh-ye Sanayi-ye Mustazrafa) in the early 1930s, he left his home in 1934 to spend a period of thirteen months in Paris learning different pictorial styles and finding his inspiration in the works of art showcased in the major museums' collections of the French capital. Always considered a preserver of the art of classical Persian painting and the driving force of the modern Neo-Safavidism movement, upon his return to Tehran, Behzad developed a new pictorial language merging his passion for revivalism with elements of modernism. His creations, thus, evoked the classical sensibilities encountered in Persian paintings by the great masters of the past, like Kamal al-Din Behzad and Reza 'Abbasi, but often added a 'modern spin', given away by either the larger size of his works, the materials used, or the direct link to Iran's contemporary social and political context. In July 2022, his works and inimitable style were added to the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts in Iran, paying tribute to his vision and artistry. Our selection of ten signed and dated figural sketches, bearing notes from Ostad Behzad to one of the apprentices working in his atelier named Towliat, embodies all the quintessential qualities of this artist's peculiar pictorial aesthetic, after having gained international exposure and reached its maturity. The note on one of the sketches unveils the humbleness and self-doubt of Behzad, who wrote "though not good, I drew this for Towliat [for teaching purposes]". These unseen and unrecorded works are a rare survival of the intimate interaction between the Master and his pupil, shedding light on their close relationship, and mutual assistance, possibly enforced as well by Behzad's deteriorating health. They also pre-date his honorary professorship and appointment of "Art Master", awarded by the Council of the Art Instructors of the College of Decorative Arts, Tehran, in 1968, shortly before his passing on 13 October of the same year at the age of 74, acting as the swan song and final visual reminder of Hossein Behzad's legacy as both artist and professor (ostad).

A SEATED PORTRAIT OF A LEARNED BEARDED MAN Modern Iran, mid-20th century, attributable to Hossein Behzad (Iranian, 1894 - 1968)

            Est: £300 - £500

A SEATED PORTRAIT OF A LEARNED BEARDED MAN Modern Iran, mid-20th century, attributable to Hossein Behzad (Iranian, 1894 - 1968) Opaque pigments, white wash, ink and pencil on plastered canvas board, the large vertical-format portrait depicting a white-clad, learned man, with long brown and grey hair and beard, seated on the floor, his right hand raised as if he was in the middle of a debate or vivid conversation, set against a plain, salmon pink-toned background, 55.5cm x 38cm. This portrait, possibly a preparatory sketch, shares a number of similarities with the "Persian Poets" series painted by the renowned 20th-century Iranian artist, Hossein Behzad (1894 - 1968). Between 1957 and 1960, Behzad produced several portraits of great Medieval Iranian poets and philosophers like Shams-e Tabrizi, Rudaki, Omar Khayyam, Sa'di, Firdawsi, and Sheikh 'Attar. Hossein Behzad's portraits are usually characterised by an archaistic, almost nostalgic look inspired by the creations of the Safavid period (especially the ones of the Isfahan School) imbued with greater realism and often set against dreamlike or void backgrounds, like the present lot.
