      JOHN BEIGEL American, Mid-19th Century "Venus and the Lute Player". Signed and dated lower right "J. Beigel 1858". Note: This is one of three known works by the artist. According to art historian William Gerdts the artist was part of a group including Severin Roesen who emigrated to America from Germany in the Mid-19th Century. This is a copy of the Titian painting by the same title currently in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Provenance: Private Collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Oil on canvas, 16.75" x 21.5". Period gilt frame 29" x 33.5"

      Signed lower right. We believe this to be only the second painting by this artist to surface in the past 150 years. Falk states "A painting titled "Field Flowers" is the only known painting by this artist, and its technical precision shows thatthe artist had some obvious skill with still- life painting. Art historian William Gerdts wrote that he belonged to a group of German artists along with Severin Roesin who emigrated to America in the mid-19th century." Provenance: A Mt. Vernonestate.
