Comments by 'Charles Reid' I have the talent that allows me to capture the person in Portraiture. Knowing the person does not matter, I just seem to capture them in my art. Est: $400 - $525

ARTIST: John Benson (Maryland, born 1949) TITLE: Niagara Falls YEAR: 1990 MEDIUM: gouache on heavy paper CONDITION: Very good. ART SIZE: 14 x 12 inches / 35 x 30 cm PAPER SIZE: 23 x 18 inches / 58 x 45 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Postal Card 30c Niagara Falls issue of August 21, 1991. Northwestern New York State and southern Ontario, Canada, share one of nature's most spectacular phenomenon -- Niagara Falls. Ten thousand years ago, receding glaciers exposed an escarpment and formed a cataract by permitting waters from Lake Erie to flow north into Lake Ontario, giving birth to the falls. Surrounded by lushly wooded landscape, they remained in primordial isolation -- unseen and untouched by European man until 1678, when Louis Hennepin accompanied French explorer Robert la Salle on an expedition to the region and later described the waterfall in his narrative "Nouvelle D?couverte." The falls are divided by Goat Island into two principle parts -- the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the United States' American Falls. Situated on the international line between the Canadian and American twin cities of Niagara Falls, this breath-taking natural wonder has been a favorite honeymoon destination and publicity stunt site for decades. In recent years both the Canadian and United States governments have diverted the rush of waters upstream -- both for conservation and hydroelectric power generation. With careful monitoring and prudent use of resources, this magnificent vestige of primitive beauty will surge and thunder for generations to come. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. John Benson (American, B. 1949) "U.S. Flag with Fireworks" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. For more than 200 years, the star-spangled banner has stood as an enduring symbol of America's hard-won freedom. It represents the people, land and ideals of the United States of America. The flag especially reflects this nation's firm belief in liberty, and no other emblem in this country is as recognized or honored. The United States was the first country to have both a Flag Day and a Pledge of Allegiance. Old Glory has also been immortalized in song and art. The Stars and Stripes inspired our national anthem in September 1814 when Francis Scott Key saw its shredded remnants flying over the fire and rubble at Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Although legend often credits the widowed seamstress, Betsy Ross, with designing the first American flag, there is some evidence that suggests Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, may have been its actual creator. Regardless of its origin, it is certain that the American flag started out with 13 stars and 13 stripes, but a quick examination of flags from the Revolutionary War era demonstrates that the new country was not too concerned with standardized flag patterns. There continued to be numerous variations throughout the next 100 years, and it wasn't until flags began to be mass-produced at the end of the 19th century that uniformity was established. JOHN BENSON (B. 1949) "US FLAG & FIREWORKS" W/C

        Est: $200 - $300

John Benson (American, B. 1949) "U.S. Flag with Fireworks" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Flag with Fireworks stamp issued November 30, 1987. The American flag ... a symbol of freedom and democracy throughout the world ... flies today as magnificently as it did nearly two hundred years ago. Its bright colors, its bold design, its strong message of pride and honor stir the heart and mind of every American citizen. The flag began as a simple sign of solidarity during the Revolutionary War. To unify those believing in the cause, the Continental Colors were chosen and used in open battle. Later, this simple ensign became a symbol of patriotism for the new United States. Soon, it was decided that the design needed to be more symbolic as the young nation sought to become a recognizable and distinctive entity. The flag went through some changes, but always evident were the alternating red and white stripes. After the Revolution, a field of blue also became popular. Later, with the U.S. Constitution signed and ratified, the official flag honored each of the thirteen new states with a star of its own, these arranged in a linear pattern on the field of blue, in the upper left corner of the flag. The stripes of alternating red and white also came to be numbered thirteen, representing the original thirteen states. Today, the flag flies proudly above public and private buildings and at sea, testimony to the glory of a nation. Image Size: 14.25 x 12 in. Overall Size: 21.25 x 18 in. Unframed. (B11306)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 21c Bison stamp issued February 22, 2001. Many years ago, massive bison roamed in thundering herds all across America. Their hulking bodies some six feet at the shoulder and each animal weighing as much as a ton, the bison numbered in the millions. An explorer once noted they provided the Plains Indians with a four-legged commissary, yielding "meat, drink, shoes, houses, fire, vessels, and their masters' whole substance." For the Indians used every part of the bison they hunted. But with the settlement of the West, the hunting of this magnificent beast became a sport, as well as a means of subsistence. Soon, bison numbers dwindled, and the size of their herds decreased, until, at the turn of the century, they faced extinction. A conservation effort was organized to save this mighty animal. And today, in certain parts of the country, in zoos, and in official wildlife preservation areas, the bison roam again, dotting the prairie with the power of their being, and increasing their numbers in time. Today, the bison of America's plains are a protected species and number about 50,000. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 18 in. Unframed. (B11481)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of issue U.S. Postal Card for Settling of Oklahoma issued April 22, 1989. The state of Oklahoma was settled quite late compared to the states around it. Once settlement began, however, it happened practically overnight. In the beginning, the area was inhabited only by Native Americans who followed huge herds of buffalo across the grasslands. These nomads were joined later by eastern tribes forced to move west and out of the way of white settlement. Treaties promised the lands of Oklahoma to the Indians "as long as grass shall grow and rivers run." After the Civil War, however, the treaties were broken. First, land was taken from tribes who had "supported the South." This land was to be distributed among other, loyal tribes, but when there was no more free or cheap land available elsewhere to white settlers, it was quickly opened to land-starved pioneers. Almost 1.9 million acres in central Oklahoma became available for settlement at noon, April 22, 1889. About 50,000 people moved into Oklahoma by that evening. In a single day, Guthrie and Oklahoma City acquired over 10,000 inhabitants. In 1893, another part of Oklahoma was opened in the same manner; other lands were distributed by lottery. The area became known as the Twin Territories -- what remained of the Indian Territory, where Native Americans still held land, and Oklahoma Territory, settled by whites. Delegates from these territories drew up a constitution as one entity, and on November 16, 1907, Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th of the United States. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 14c Take Pride in America Postal Card issued September 22, 1987. America is a vast land of breathtaking beauty filled with the mysteries of nature and the benefits of culture. But, such a land requires care. Thus, in 1986, President Reagan called for a "Take Pride in America" campaign designed to guard our public lands and cultural resources. Since then, thousands have taken steps to preserve and restore our American heritage, the land of our forefathers. Sponsored by the Department of the Interior, the campaign has sought to increase public awareness and plant the seeds of pride in citizens throughout the country. Civic clubs, youth groups and preservation societies have taken up the cause, spreading the word that Americans have something to be proud of. Image Size: 14.25 x 12 in. Overall Size: 22.75 x 20 in. John Benson (B. 1949) "Statue of Liberty"

        Est: $300 - $500

John Benson (American, B. 1949) "Statue of Liberty" Signed middle right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The Lady, the Goddess, Miss Liberty -- she has been called many names, but she has always been the symbol of freedom. Our grand Lady of the Harbor evokes the hopes and dreams of all those who gaze upon her brilliant face and flock to her open shores. The Statue was a gift from France to the people of the United States -- whose striving for liberty and social justice helped inspire the French in their own search for liberty. To help bring the vision of the statue to reality, the French government enlisted the help of a young sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Initially given the name Liberty Enlightening the World, Bartholdi envisioned the statue to embody the everlasting spirit of Liberty, which would serve as an inspiration for all nations, for all peoples, for all times. After experimenting with several models, Bartholdi revealed the statue in her final form: a serene but forceful woman in classical garb, with an upheld torch of freedom, a crown of radiant light, with chains of bondage broken at her feet, and a sacred tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. Since her dedication in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood proudly in New York Harbor, beckoning the thousands of immigrants from faraway lands to her free and prospering shores. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. Image Size: 13 x 18 in. Overall Size: 20 x 26 in. Unframed. (B09875)
