The dynamic composition and rich colouring seen in this coastal formation are typical of Berchtold's watercolours. In the middle of the painting a wave is breaking forcefully, the energetic brushstrokes imply the water's untamed force. To the left and top areas of the painting, the sea spray and surging waves are signified by bold brushstrokes in white and blue. The red colour emphasizes the dramatic effect. To the bottom right, from where the wave seems to be looming, dark blue and green tones take over. Berchtold skillfully unites the forceful gravity of the sea with the lightness and freshness of the waves, and thus generates a both impetuous and reassuring work of art. On reverse side labeled in pencil "18 Küstenformation I" and "Dr. Weiz". Mounted in a passe-partout. Very good condition. Hubert Berchtold (1922 - 1983) Hubert Berchtold began painting during the Second World War when he took evening classes at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen, Belgium. After the end of the war he visited the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, where he studied under Hubert Boeckl and Josef Dobrowsky. Inspired by travels to France and Spain he translates in his works influences from French painting. In the 1960s he developed his own style in many different series, which is neither abstract nor naturalistic. His works are characterized by dynamic compositions in strong colours. He studied the human body and landscape painting equally intensively.

Bereiste in den 50-er Jahren halb Europa und Nordafrika. 1956 erhielt er den Hugo-von-Montfort-Preis in Bregenz, 1968 den Theodor-Körner-Preis, 1982 den Kunstpreis der Stadt Konstanz. Sign.
