Berkeley (George) A Treatise concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. Part I [all published], first edition, title within double rule border with faint pencil signature of Baker at head, ink signature of L.G.Baker to head of p.51 and two manuscript alterations/additions to p.61, lacking final blank leaf, rather soiled and stained, G2 & 3 a little frayed at lower edge, K1 lacking upper outer corner with slight loss to pagination, later half dark blue roan, spine gilt, rubbed, corners a little worn, [Keynes 5; PMM 176], 8vo, Dublin, by Aaron Rhames, for Jeremy Pepyat, 1710. *** Rare. Berkeley's most important philosophical work, in which he "maintained that no existence is conceivable or possible which is not conscious spirit or the ideas of which such a spirit is conscious. This presupposes complete equation of subject and object: no object can exist without a Mind to conceive it". (PMM). The manuscript alterations/additions to p.61 are as follows: line 11 "should" is altered to "might" and in line 14 "without the help of external Bodies" is inserted after "Intelligence", the whole reading, "Suppose, what no one can deny possible, an Intelligence without the help of external Bodies to be affected with the same train of Sensations or Ideas that you are, imprinted in the same order and with like vividness in his Mind."

Tonson and S. Draper in the Strand, 1754 bound with [Berkeley (George, Bishop of Cloyne)] A Miscellany, containing several tracts on various subjects, first English edition, family presentation copy, woodcut tail-pieces, [Keynes 141; Goldsmiths' 8683; Rothschild 383; Sabin 4877], Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper in the Strand, 1752, together 2 works in 1 vol., later grey and brown pencil marginalia and marking of text, some spotting and light staining, burgundy leather spine label loosely inserted, contemporary calf, gilt, covers with wide floral borders, spine in compartments and with garland and stylised floral decoration, joints split, but holding firm, spine ends and corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, 8vo ⁂ I: Berkeley's important satire on 'free-thinking', and in particular the Astronomer Royal Sir Edmund Halley. It attacks the foundations of mathematics with the same ferocity as the author felt religious truths were attacked by 'free-thinkers'. He claimed to uncover numerous gaps in proof, attacked the use of infinitesimals, the diagonal of the unit square, and the very existence of numbers. The overall aim was not so much to mock mathematics or mathematicians, but rather to show that mathematicians, like Christians, relied upon incomprehensible 'mysteries' in the foundations of their reasoning. II: Includes 'Prospect of planting Arts and Learning in America'; 'A Proposal for Better Supplying Churches in our Foreign Plantations, and for converting the Savage Americans to Christianity'; 'De motu' (against Newton); and 'Farther Thoughts on Tar-Water'; Provenance: 'The gift of Jos: Berkeley Esq. to El: Berkeley ?1768. The gift of El: Berkeley to her dear son..' (ink inscription to head of title of Miscellany).

Berkeley (George) Saggio d'una nuova teoria sopra la visione, FIRST and ONLY EDITION, woodcut printer’s device to title, illistrations in text, a little staining or dust soiling in places, contemporary vellum boards, spotted, 8vo, Francesco Storti, Venice , 1732. *** Scarce Italian translation of one of George Berkeley’s scientific works. Berkeley was one of the three most famous British Empiricists. He’s best known for his early works on vision (‘An Essay towards a New Theory of Vision’, 1709) and metaphysics (‘A Treatise concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge’, 1710; ‘Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous’, 1713). Berkeley’s empirical theory of vision challenged the then-standard account of distance vision, based on geometrical calculations. His alternative account focuses on visual and tactual objects.

BERKELEY, GEORGE. THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONUS. G. JAMES FOR HENRY CLEMENTS, 1713 8vo (197 x 112mm.), first edition, contemporary speckled calf gilt, some passages underlined in a near contemporary hand, a few short tears, tears to B6, C8, D8, F8 affecting a few words, minor worming to margin at end, joints partially cracked, wear to edges of binding rare. Many contemporary readers had found Berkeley's classic exposition of his immaterialist doctrine in A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710) to be strange and unpalatable, so the philosopher recast his thinking in more popular form as a series of dialogues, to elaborate on his notions and "to place them in a new light".

FIRST EDITION of Berkeley's critique of Newton's theory of fluxions and the principles of calculus. Luce, author of the Life of Berkeley, called the Analyst 'in part a criticism of Newton's doctrine of Fluxions, and in part an argument ad hominem for Christianity.'
