Signed on the left margin: JSBernard Jacques Samuel Bernard was born into a Protestant family in Paris in 1615 and was the son of the painter Noel Bernard. He was apprenticed to Simon Vouet and Louis du Guernier. In 1648 he joined the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, which was founded that year, and became a professor there in 1655 until he was expelled for religious reasons in 1681. After renouncing Protestantism, he was reinstated four years later. Jacques Samuel Bernard mainly devoted himself to miniature painting, but created several still lifes in the early 1660s, including the present painting. He died in Paris in 1687.

Jacques Samuel Bernard, Vase of Flowers

      Est: €30,000 - €33,000

Jacques Samuel Bernard, Vase of Flowers The place of birth of the talented still life painter Jacques Samuel Bernard is unknown, but his works and style can be reconstructed through the few signed pieces found in museums and on the art market. One particularly notable characteristic of his work is the frequent use of the same metal vase with a fire-gilt base, usually placed upon a tabletop with an egg and dart border. His floral arrangements also become slimmer towards the top, with just a few blooms surmounting the composition. Both of these typical motifs can be observed in the present work and in a similar signed still life sold by Sotheby's in New York, on 28th of January 1999 as lot 283. 69 x 53 cm (oval)
