            Zwei Illustrationen zum Alten Testament: Vision des Ezechiel wer auferstehen wird; Reiter, die durch die Lüfte jagen, aus dem 2. Buch der Makkabäer. 2 Zeichnungen, je Feder in Schwarzgrau, grau laviert, ein Blatt gegriffelt, je auf alter Sammlermontage. 13,9 x 20,6 cm bzw. 14 x 20,9 cm. Die Vision des Ezechiel unten rechts signiert "B. PICART", die Erscheinung über Jerusalem unten links signiert und datiert "B. PICART F.it 1698.". Wz. Nebenmarke. Der in Paris geborene Bernard Picart reist 1696 zunächst nach Antwerpen, wo er den Zeichnungspreis der dortigen Kunstakademie gewinnt, und geht im Anschluss nach Amsterdam. Dort entstehen 1698 auch unsere beiden Illustrationen. Im selben Jahr kehrt Picart wieder nach Paris zurück, doch 10 Jahre später entscheidet er sich dann endgültig nach Holland überzusiedeln. Die vorliegenden Blätter entstanden im Auftrag des Buchhändlers Pieter Mortier, der in niederländisch und französisch eine monumentale, reich illustrierte Ausgabe des Alten und Neuen Testaments publizieren wollte. Neben Picart arbeiteten auch Goeree und Elliger an dem zweibändigen Werk, welches schließlich 1700 unter dem Titel Historie des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments in Amsterdam erschien. Die Tafel mit der Vision des Ezechiel (Ez 37,1-28) findet sich zwischen den S. 240 und 241, die Erscheinung der Reiter über Jerusalem (2 Makk 5,2-3) zwischen den S. 276 und 277. Der Kupferstich zu Ezekiel wurde von Picart noch selbst gestochen, während er für den anderen nur die Zeichnung lieferte (Stich von Matthys Pool), möglicherweise seiner Rückreise nach Paris geschuldet. - Provenienz: Aus einer unbekannten Sammlung "HB" (nicht bei Lugt). - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Bernard, 1723-1743. 11 volumes in-folio, maroquin rouge, triple filet doré, dos orné, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées (Reliure de l'époque). Édition originale de cette monumentale histoire des rites et coutumes religieux, recherchée pour la richesse et la qualité de son illustration, dont Bernard Picart a dirigé l'exécution jusqu'à sa mort en 1733 et gravé la majeure partie des sujets. Le but de cette magistrale entreprise est de proposer au lecteur un tableau comparé des religions, en les présentant pour la première fois sur un pied d’égalité. Le texte est une synthèse issue des meilleures sources disponibles, compilée d'après de nombreux auteurs et rédigée principalement par Jean-Frédéric Bernard et Bruzen de La Martinière. Elle se compose de sept volumes parus entre 1723 et 1737 (quatre sont consacrés aux Cérémonies des Juifs et des catholiques, puis des Grecs et des protestants, anglicans, quakers, anabaptistes, etc., un aux Mahométans et deux autres aux Coutumes des peuples idolâtres des Indes occidentales et orientales), auxquels sont joints les deux volumes traitant des Superstitions anciennes et modernes (1733-1736) et les deux volumes du supplément (1743), qui renferment les dissertations des abbés Banier et Le Mascrier et les parallèles historiques entre les religions. Les Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses a été réédité, avec des modifications, à Paris en 1741, puis en 1783, en 4 volumes avec de nouveaux tirages des planches. L'illustration consiste en un frontispice représentant le tableau abrégé des religions du monde, signé de Bernard Picart, et 263 (sur 265) planches hors texte, à double page ou dépliantes, également gravées par Picart. La première édition est « celle que l’on préfère car elle contient les premières épreuves », indique Brunet. Tous les volumes sont ici à la bonne date. Exceptionnel exemplaire complet de tous les volumes requis en premier tirage reliés uniformément en maroquin rouge de l’époque. Les exemplaires parfaitement complets sont extrêmement rares : trois planches n'ont pas été reliés dans celui-ci (pl. 7 du t. I et pl. 1 et 22 du t. VII) ; en revanche, le tome VII comprend une planche supplémentaire (Convulsionnaires du cimetière de Saint-Médard).
